Tesco have a lot of the Dolmio sauces on half price offer of E1.04 or 99c depending on the particular one,

i have never seen them priced so well, normally 2 for E3.8 or local store have them 2 for E2.5 so E1 each is a good price

    valid until the 6-3-2012,

Sautee some finely chopped onions, add a tin of chopped tomatoes, squeeze of tomato puree, pinch of basil, spoon of mango chutney --- tastier and a fraction of the cost

Was this not good enough for the More Tesco Bargains thread?

All those ingredients a fraction of 99c. Maybe 7/8's and a load more effort.

Agreed. You can use a jar of sauce as your base and add extra onion, garlic, olive oil, herbs whatever and save a lot of time and effort for similar result to all made from scratch.

Tin of plum tomatos in Lidl is 37c, tube of tomato puree is 45c and would do about 10 sauces, basil you can get in Aldi in large bags on special offer at around €2.99 and literally lasts years, say 100 sauces, onion is on special in either Aldi or Lidl every so often but lets say 79c for 7 onions, mango chutney is around 89c in either Aldi or Lidl (I forget), say it lasts around 15 sauces.
Total ingredient per sauce is therefore around 62c and there is really no effort in any of the steps apart from the onion which is 5minutes max and optional.
But hey, not knocking the BA, nice to have some in the press at that price and a good reduction on the usual price, just throwing in an alternative as we moved from jars to "scratch" a few years back and would never turn back as the alternative is much much tastier.

+1 on the Lloyd Grossman sauces. Particularly the bolognese.

You can't be talking about fresh herbs.

Completely agree slave1. Just one interesting ingredient there - mango chutney? Never tried that before, does it add to the sauce? I would have thought something like that would get lost in all the other much stronger ingredients? Another nice dried herb to throw in is oregano, plus my own personal taste is to add a nice few drops of Worcester Sauce into the mix, yum! :D

The loyd Grossman are 2 for 3 euros or were not sure if that offer is still on, i see in dunnes there is an offer on the dolmio stir in 2 for 2.50. A plain variety if cheap is grand when you can add your own herbs and spices to get the taste to your fancy

Why stop there? You can get a fresh potted basil plant in Dunnes for 2 euro.

They grow like wildfire indoors and only require some sunlight & an occasional water.

That's my (no longer) secret ingredient, takes the blandness out, put it in towards the end (after mince is cooked and bubblying away for a while) as it does not require cooking, just heating through, adjust quantity to personal taste
