Shimano DURA-ACE 9000 specs

    Shimano’s new Dura-Ace 9000:

    - There will be electronic (Di2) and mechanical versions.
    - DA9000 Di2 gets shift levers, “similar” to Ultegra Di2, as well as the narrow-diameter Di2 wiring harness unveiled on the new Ultegra Di2.
    - The cranks use a four-arm spider (like Shimano mountain cranks; current road cranks use a five-arm spider) and a new, lighter, bottom-bracket system. Shimano is sticking with their 24mm axle standard; there is no BB30 or BB386EVO option.
    - The hoods on the mechanical STI levers are smaller, with a more ergonomic fit and feel.
    - The mechanical version will use a proprietary shift cable.
    - Front-derailleur shifting effort is reduced by 38% (claimed).
    - The brakes are all new. There are two mounting options: standard center bolt and two-bolt aero/TT style.
    - The mechanical group’s weight is claimed at 1,908 grams, a 67-gram reduction from Dura-Ace 7900.
    - The cassette and freehub body are wider: 10-speed cassettes will work on 11-speed wheels (with a spacer), but not vice versa. Rear hub spacing remains 130mm.
    - Shimano did not add any more carbon: Like DA7900, only the brake-lever blades and rear-derailleur pulley cage are carbon.
    - The Shimano document also describes a new dropout out configuration for road bikes, but our sources say, “There’s not really any change on that from our perspective.”

    The most interesting part is this:
    The cassette and freehub body are wider: 10-speed cassettes will work on 11-speed wheels (with a spacer), but not vice versa. Rear hub spacing remains 130mm.

    Which probably means that you ll have to ditch all your wheels. I assume SRAM will have to follow too. And apart from the 11gears nothing else is interesting.

    Do not want. Maybe it's sectarianism, but four-arm cranks are strictly for the lower orders.

    I love it!! Chainset is a great idea, why have 5 arms if you can get away with 4?! Was thinking of getting DA 7900 mechanical a couple of months back but I just don't like the brake/STI levers. Looking at the changes with DA 9000 I think I will be upgrading (no electronic for me though!) anyone know when the new group will be going on sale?

    I'm pretty sure there only for TT bikes with limited clearance. For general use they would get covered with crud very quickly.

    The 4 arm spider looks odd IMO, 3 would have looked right.

    Brakes underneath, beside BB, why? Surely it they would get all the cr*p thrown up by the front wheel? Also, how is rear brake mounted, another hole in the frame i.e. new frame?

    Well thats a bit pointless.

    I was reading on some online magazine that it was for TT frames with aerodynamics in mind. But on a road bike? Why?

    Does anyone know whether the DA9000 is compatible with DA7900? I am particularly curious about the way the 9000 chain would work with the 9700 crank. I just bought a new 7900 crank, not realising this new set was coming out so quickly.

    You can make the seat stays even thinner and lighter/ more compliant because you no longer need to add a brake bridge and support the forces from braking.

    The issue seems to be cable length, Trek specify an exact cable length for the brake to work smoothly. More fiddly setup.

    Due to go on sale from October onwards but supplies will be limited until early 2013. Basically , if you really want it asap then it would need to be pre-ordered .

    Not cheap though but generally there Shimano prices are competitive. I imagine that timeline won't be met though but could be wrong..

    Having the brakes under the BB will also allow a lower CoG for the bike overall.
