Shirt Making

    Hi,

I am not sure if this is the right forum for this but here goes.

Lets start with I am a man in my early thirties. I have a huge problem with buying shirts. I am sick of buying shirts that do not fit correctly. If the arms are not the right length then the arm holes are not right or the collar does not fit quite like I want.

The obvious answer is to go to a shirt maker and have my shirts made. I have done a lot of research into this and as much as I would like to do it I cannot justify €170 per shirt.

I have come up with an answer. I want to learn how to make my own shirts.
I want to lear how to sew, cut and design my own shirts.

Does anybody know of any courses or information that might help me in my quest.

    Thanks

There is is no need to pay €170. Moville clothing in Donegal do three for €100. The Hong Kong tailors charge €50 per shirt and will discount for bigger orders.

I think you'll find that the Moville Clothing Company are a bit dearer than that for made-to-measure.

There are two other shirt-makers on the island, the Grosvenor Shirt Company in Strabane and Smyth and Gibson who have an outlet in Belfast. In the case of Grosvenor they have reduced prices for cash buyers at the factory in Strabane. Smyth and Gibson also run promotions in the Belfast Telegraph from time to time.

That would probably be a lot easier than going down the road of making your own shirts, as there are an awful lot of skills to learn including pattern-drafting and manipulation, sewing and hand-sewing.

Good cloth for a shirt is not cheap i.e. starting at E20+ per metre and mistakes can be costly.

PM me if you want more information on bespoke and made-to-meaure shirtmaking.
