Do I need a 'Connected' landline to order Sky multiroom

Im under the impression that you need a landline to plug into a Sky box to keep sky informed that you have not moved the box to another house or person etc.

But does the phone line have to be active with Eircom or whoever for you to get the go ahead to get Sky multiroom.

The reason I am asking is that Im planning on swithing from UPC to Sky for multiple reasons and I dont have an 'active' landline. I have the socket in the wall job that the oldskool line plugged into but have not had a landline phone for years..

Anybody up to scratch with this?? Thanks

You will need a working landline connected to both Sky Digiboxes, otherwise Sky will offer to charge you two full subscriptions. The installer might refuse to install.

Thanks for that. Says that you can get €50 cash back if you join before tomorrow. Might just order it online tonight pay the €25 upfront fee take the chance and see if the technician has some sort of solution. When I go to purchase online I enter in my old home phone number and a green tick lights up beside it.

Id probably stay with UPC but they cant provide me with a HD box. Out of stock waiting on parts and the're just a nightmare to deal with in general. Im not one to moan but Im just fed up at this stage due to other set backs.

The apartments we're in only just got the dish installed so everyone can tap into sky.

Is there a way to use your UPC phone line to send a signal to confirm you have kept the box in the same place. Ill be keeping their broadband

Seemingly some can and some cant use their UPC phone line to get callbacks. Seems to be that UPC in Dublin can do it from what Ive been reading here. Prob should have just done a search first..

Rang Sky today regarding the UPC phoneline callback issue and I was told by the friendly guy on the phone that Dublin is the only place it will work.
I asked him is he sure of it because I don't wanna be stuck with a problem when the Sky guy cannot get a callback to work and they leave me in the lurch.
He guaranteed me it would work in my area and that if it didnt I would be refunded.

As regards just hoping the Sky guy will just install Sky multiroom without an active landline...... I wouldn't bet on it. You may get multiroom but you will probably be told you have to pay full whack for both until the landline is working.

I actually went ahead and tried to order the package online to avail of the deal before the deadline which was tonight.

Anyway what happened was after I put in all of the information including where it would be installed, picking 'apartment block' (We have a dish connecting the entire block) It continues on to the next page to say 'We see your looking to connect in an apartment complex etc. We will give you a ring back soon to confirm whether your area is already set up..' and so on.

So I wont actually qualify for the deal ha

Never mind, im sure I'll end up sorting out call backs through my UPC phone line.

    Hi Dylzer..

Yeah,I saw that and was just going to reply,,but you beat Me to it..

As you have to share the dish,,they only allow you one feed from it..So multi-room is out..

In fact,if I'm correct,,that would even rule you out of getting sky +.

I'm open to correction on that one though.

How often does the Sky Box have to call home? Once per week per day per month?

For Sky+ and multiple rooms you need 2 wall connections for plus box and one wall connection for seconds rooms without cabling.

If the place has just be re-wired, you may have two connections in the main sitting room. You need a seperate connection in the other rooms for multiroom.

If you are unsure best to speak to neighbours etc. or the company that installed the new system.

Sky always have deals on the go, free install, first two months free, recommend a friend for a 50 euro cheque.

Generally all the deals are one of the above. i.e. get free install, but no free months, recommend a friend by then no free install etc.

If you have a Sky connection in the apartment you know for zero per month you can use a freesat box which will give you BBC's etc for free?

Also depending on the install you may also get RTE via an aerial on the roof depending on what the company actually installed.

Sky's system is best, but freesat+ is very similar with no monthly charges. Sky is a mimimum of 25 per month x 12 months.

The basic Sky package does not include discovery channel nor setanta (which UPC include in basic package) etc. Be sure you know what you are signing up to.

Same as myself... Moved house 2 years ago and never reconnected the phone line on the sky+ box or multiroom box. In-fact I don't think we ever told them we moved :p

I had a proper look at what I wanted, what Sky had and what UPC had to offer. I was planning on getting the Entertainment and the extra pack , along with multiroom and HD. Sky have way more HD channels than UPC.

'One' of the main reasons for the change is that I'm getting a new 43" plasma and want to make the most of it. Even though all HD channels are broadcast in 1080i and its 720p I still would rather have 50 HD channels than the measly 10 UPC provide.

I'll leave asking about Freesat boxes to another thread. I'm guessing that's a whole other can a worms...

Why buy inferior 720p when 1080p/1080i screens are cheap? Plasma today offers no advantage over CFL or CCFL or LED backlight LCD screens and some disadvantages (lag, lifetime, burn-in, lower resolution)

I've been down this road and have come to the conclusion that plasma is what I want for the time being. Its a Samsung PS43D490 and it seems like a nice bit of kit. Cheapest I've seen it is Currys for €429.98.

The viewing angle in the apartment will be from various angles. Plasma covers this nicely. I know its 720p but Ill be watching it from about 8-9 feet away so I don't think 1080p would be terribly noticeable. I have an LCD in my bedroom an sit 3-4 feet away so Full HD benefits in that respect.

As regards lag, no consoles will be played on it and it actually has 'Game Mode' which speeds up the scaling process, apparently eliminating the video lag time.

I don't think lifetime concerns me too much. If it had an expected lifetime of 50,000 hrs and you watched it for 10 hrs a day that gives about 14 years to half life. Fairly sure I'll be rid of it in about 5 or 6 max. New generation tvs will always be entering the market. Price of this model has dropped substantially from last year.

Pretty sure it has screen burn protection built in too. Watch a lot of night time tv so it also wins there with enhanced black colour in a dark room. No blur watching the matches either or other sports.

I guess if led lcd were cheaper than what I'm going for I'd get it. But I doubt that will be the case this year and doubt it would be 43"
