Bindweed spreading under matting

Just wondering if this is a common problem.

When I moved onto my place a few years back, it was all lawn - I took off a lot of turf to create beds and used weed suppressant matting. All was fine until I went to replace the matting after a good few years.

When I lifted it, the ground was a huge mass of white bindweed !

I'm now wondering whether to replace it or abandon it to grass again !

Not saying its the best solution, but I would leave it exposed for a fewweeks till it starts growing leaves then spray with a systemic weedkiller and leave it till it is completely dead. If you leave it you are going to create problems for yourself down the road.
