I don't know for sure if it applies in all Aldi stores, but the welders that Aldi had for sale a couple of months back for €59.99 have been reduced to €39.99. I bought one when they first came out for €59.99, and have to say that for the money, it was very good.

    http://www.aldi.ie/ie/html/offers/special_buys3_18821.htm

As I said, I don 't know if the offer is just in Aldi Cahir, but there was a pallet full of them there today, for anyone interested.

hi jabba, bought one of these myself but have not had a chance to use it yet.
just wondering how you connected it up. i've heard different views on how safe they are connected via a three pin plug to standard household supply but the alternative seems to be to install a complete 3 phase ring which is not practicle for me at the mo.
    which methord did you use?

I got an electrician fit a round plug and socket. You know the kind of ones that builders use in their 110v, only bigger. He also made it have it's own fuse at the fusebox. I think he called it an LCB, or something. It wouldn't have been practical for me either to fit a 3 phase ring. I know of a few other lads that just stuck a 3 pin plug on it, and said it worked fine for them.

    ELCB (Earth leakage circuit breaker)
This is only a single phase welder, so discussing it in relation to a 3 phase system is pointless.

Have one of them for a few years. It's fine for light work, but it won't weld heavy stuff for long periods.
Works fine as it is on a standard 3 pin plug. But I would always plug it into the ring main circuit. And if using an extension lead, make sure it's heavy duty and fully extended.

Just put 13A plug on it and try it. Worst that will happen is you blow the plug 13A fuse or it trips the Circuit Breaker for your sockets. Even that is only likely to be a problem on higher Amperage settings. Sometimes welders will do either first time you plug in and then run smoothly for the day.
Ideally if you have a cooker power point with an integral 13A socket, plug in to the 13A socket alongside that. If you don't use an electric cooker even better get a blue industrial socket wired to the cooker outlet. You'll have no prob running a much bigger welder off that set-up.

Really? Then that's a cracking deal. You should have posted a thread about that then, that's how this forum is supposed to work.

either post a link to the product with the price or don't gloat about these savings, or we'll have another cat5e thread.

    Simple as that.

I had a very similar one a long time ago - was great as long as the metal you were welding wasn't too large - made up some gates and bike shed etc -
it tended to work for only about 20 minutes or so though - then it would shut down and needed to cool down before you could use it again.

I used to plug it into the cooker socket in the kitchen - that was wired for an electric oven. And it would work fine.

Well worth even the original price to see metal just melt in front of you :)

Spotted the welder much reduced (can't remember if it was 39.99) in ALDI Blackpool Cork today.
They had a few different extra-special reductions on hand-written signs - camping satellite set half price, and there was a DVD player for 16.99.

No, they're not the same, the Bargain base (Lidl) welder is less powerful, 40-80 amps versus 55-160 amps for the Aldi one. Basically the Aldi one lets you weld thicker metal and is good value for the price.
They are gone up to €59.99 again

Still €40 in Celbridge anyway, good few left.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Had the ALDI one for two years now it'll burn 2.5 rods all day heavier rods it needs a break and i don't think the electrode holder is up to it. but very few welders are 100% duty these days and certainly not in this price bracket. I fitted a heavy duty clamp and electrode holder the original clamp is OK i put it on my old mig but the holder is a bit rubbish. everytime it comes out it saves what it cost.

Scratch that, seems the word got out over the weekend, got one today for €40 in Celbridge but there's only five left now.
