    hi jasonmk2
    welcome to boards
i dont know any garages recruiting at the minute
however my advise would be to volunteer at your local garage(sat etc)or try helping out a local mechanic
this will give you an insight to what is involved and also any prospective employer will know you are keen
good luck and dont get disheartened, determination is a great thing

I was told the same thing recently. They insisted I go into them (or risk losing my JS) and when I expressed an interest in this, told me I had to find it myself. I then asked about different courses, and likewise, they said I have to go find them myself. This being the case, what are they there for now then???!!!

Like most people you have to go find work and not expect it to be handed to them......

OP, call into garages, do up a CV and give it in. Ask them can you spend some time in the garage to to get to know the set up. Also check out some of the job sites, Monster, Irishjob etc, you might pick something up there. Good luck

............they provide the classroom training once you are employed by a garage, do you really expect them to find you employment too. In your case it seems you only encountered Fas as you were given a prod to, so realistically you have sweet f all interest in anything they offer.

Yeah, cos you know me!

A little bit of direction from these people isn't too much to ask is it? I've worked for 23 years, never been out of work until recently. I have NO idea how things work or what to do. A little bit of help wouldn't do any harm would it? No, it's just easier for some people to presume and be gobby.

They did give you direction, they informed you that it was necessary for you to find a garage to take you on as an apprentice, that's how it works, that's what they told you :)

Id agree that offering your services for free for a little while would be the way to go. I believe FAS/Solus?? are encouraging businesses to take on apprentices and offering them financial incentives, though this may just be government spun propaganda i've been hearing.
Fair play for being up for work, says a lot about you, only real world advise I can offer is that start off humble, show initiative and interest, even if its only looking over a mechanic's shoulder with the broom in your other hand (i've been there) and be punctual if you get in somewhere. Best of luck

Go in to as many garages in person as you can and ask for the service manager. Do not apply via emails to garages as they will pay no attention in my opinion. We receive the odd few emails from apprentices and they're normally poorly written and done so in a way that a guidance counselor in school would show you!

Most garages want to see the guy call to the door, have a chat and give you a chance to show what you're like in working conditions, not hear that you like playing gaa and going to the cinema with your friends!

I'm slightly rambling here but just don't email!!!!

OP you seem like a driven guy, i'm sure you'll find something, all the best

OK, maybe I came across wrong. When I finished school (back in 86) the first thing my parents did was make me register with FAS. At the time, they did all the running around and the searching for you. I was just surprised/shocked/caught off-guard that they didn't do it any more, that's all.

    Very good advice there, cheers.
