Hi guys I have a friend who wants to buy her first car a 1ltr run around only wants to spend €800 max
Any ideas on makes that might be worth a look we were looking at this http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3003153

I know its not everybodys cup of tea but what you think for a car that would hopefully last a year ish. Only problems that I saw was an engine mount but not to bad that would need replacing and a little oil in the air filter which I'm told is not a big deal " is it "

Any help would be great looking to buy in Wex
Oh the guy will not budge on price not even a tener

    That Daihatsu looks rough.

Its very hard to beat a 93-02 micra or the 99-05 yaris as bullet proof learner cars.

This is not the model with the reversing sensors then.:):):)
Have to agree with Nissan doctor re his choices. Just make sure that any Micra doesn't have a timing chain rattle and check the sills, front cross-member (bottom of radiator) and boot floor for rust.
The Yaris would be the better bet...more refined and that little bit roomier. Listen out for gearbox whine, especially in 4th and 5th, although they will usually keep going for ages even if the box is noisy.

If ye got the sirion for 500 euro or less it would do a good job for you especially with the 13 test
Go look at it in daylight you'll find it very hard to get any car with a test for this money and a test is 55 euro before any work

I wouldn't go near that car if you paid me, looks very badly minded, just because they are older doesn't mean they have to be in bits.

This is a good example as to what to look for. http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3040205
Long test, taxed, 4 good tires apparently, very low milage and looks like it has been very well looked after.

If your friend has little money to spend then they should make sure they spend it wisely.

Ah come on. no-where is far in Ireland. The right car is worth travelling for imo.

has to be a fiesta. Should consume roughly the same as the other 1L cars. Tax is not much more and they are pretty trouble free.

    this looks nice http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3032924

That micra hasn't got power steering

Also the rear bumper is off the newer model.

Decent small economic runabouts are going for more than the OP's budget as their low running costs make them popular. Most of the cheaper stuff is cheap because it is junk or needs work. Either she will have to raise her budget a bit or start looking at cars wth engine larger than 1.0.

I didn't have power steering in my first car and I survived and considering OP's friends budget I didn't think it was a bad example.

Didn't even notice a difference in the bumpers so if its different well spotted.

Micras without power steering are a bitch to drive.
Dunno why, as the car is light, must be the gearing or something but they're a pain. Gx models have it.

A lot of the 97 micra's have power steering

Should be noted that fiesta clocks only go to 99999

L models don't, neither do the 'lite' or 'shape' editions (the one in the ad is the latter)

Fair enough, Ive never driven one without power steering so couldn't tell you what they are like. I will tell you this though, when I moved fromm saxo to the polo my arms were definately thanking me for it!

Polo is easy in comparison! Girlfriends old car was a micra L, used to slag her parking till I drove t one day

The only time you'd ever notice a lack of power steering is when parking and even then on a small car with small wheels/tyres it really not that hard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

But it's 2012, why go for a car that doesn't have it when most have it?

Agree, its just that some people make out that a small car without power steering will be like trying to turn a cargo ship!

Cargo ship would have power steering though.

Just look in the 'angernomics thread. I'm a big fan of the 999cc Polo. But hey, that's me. Last one I got was for 350 with NCT for a year and no Tax, but still, 8k later (and now its gone to its next owner) it was a good ride while it lasted.
