Wife is now looking at a 2010-2011 A4 to replace the Beemer which was stolen a couple of weeks ago.

What would be a reasonable offer to a dealer if the car was priced around the 24-29k mark if it's a straight sale?

Anyone know of any well priced/specced ones for sale - preferably the s-line.

    Thanks lads.

It really depends on the dealer's situation.
Some will be delighted to get a car clear out the door for cash. Some would rather a finance deal (their commission is often more than their profit on the car sale). Others I've heard would rather make a small profit on a sale and take in a trade in that they can make more money on, if they're having difficulty getting reasonably priced stock in the trade.

Only way to find out is to talk to them.

Private sales in the small ads though, cash is king. Spend a few bob getting the right candidates checked out by a mechanic and think about buying a third party warranty and you could still be saving a fortune.

Impossible to say, some dealers build in more of a margin than others. For a 2011 I would do my homework looking at other dealers equivalent models and then start negotiations at €3K below asking and see how it goes. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

As always, the wriggling room is determined totally on how the car is priced day 1.

2 examples to illustrate - identical cars.

1/. Priced keenly at say €20,000. Dealer will sell at no less than €19750.

2/. Priced less keenly at say €21,500. Dealer sells at €20,000.

A buyer who knows what the car is really worth will have done his homework, and will buy car 1/. A buyer who looks only at what discount he can get will buy car 2/.

The trick is to establish the value of the car. Asking price really doesn't matter.

Get the insurance money. get rid of the wife, claim the insurace... and live in barbados:D.
if thats not an option, for the amount of money your talking about spending, start 3k below asking as said above. And increase less that the dealer comes down eg(dealer drops 500, you add 350, till ye are close enough)... till you have about 2 grand saved.
