Insurance

I am looking to insure myself and my Gf (as a named) on a lexus 2L. I am 30 and she is 23.

I have been on a motorbike for the past 4 years and am just returning to the car scene. I have a full car licence since i was 17 and no claims bonus for about 5 years, however this was over 4 years ago and so the insurance companies don't accept this. They seem to think that the way people drive has changed so much in 4 years

Does anybody know an insurance company that can work with my situation, anybody been in a similar situation? I have received quotes for over €1000. I have tried no nonsence (€450 for just myself), but they say they don't insure named drivers under 25. Is there a way to get around this? I heard that if I get insured and then ask them to add a named driver that they have to??

    Can anyone help with this?

    Thanks.
    GC

No claims is only valid for 2 years. I had the same hassle when going back on a bike after a few years break.
Regards Ins all you can do it ring ring ring....I found axa the best in the end.

Thanks for the info Bronson. I have tried axa, they don't deal with anyone without previous no claims bonus. Since my no claims bonus is over 2 years old they don't count this, which is ridiculous.

My previous 2 years no claims is on the motorbike only.

I believe Quinn (liberty) do a bike and car deal but this is still well above the 1000 (for just the car section).

I will have to keep ringing and see if i can get any lower than the 940 i am at now.

An insurer is under no obligation to add on a driver that falls outside their underwriting criteria so if you want to add your g/f then it pretty pointless taking the nononsense quote.Companies like Setanta and Kennco are also like this ie they wont take drivers on under a certain age.

Your best bet is to try a decent brokers and see what they can come up with.Ring chill.ie and see if they can help or Brittons if you havnt called either already.

    Thanks Otis / OSI,

Ya no nonsence said that if I was on the policy myself and then wanted to add someone under 25 that they would review the situation, but that they would not insure us both at the same time.

I work in a brokerage, and this is by far your best bet. Its amazing some of the sway they can have and while you might not get the full five years (you might) they could get you three or four years NCB

"I work in a brokerage, and this is by far your best bet."

Sorry Griffin, are you saying my best bet is no nonsence? That I should insure myself first and then add the g/f a couple of weeks later? Or that I should keep looking until someone can do me a deal with my no claims bonus, which I had 4 years of over 3 years ago?

    Thanks.

I have tried chill.ie and Brittons. I will give them another go but they didn't like the idea of getting below 1000

Had the same problem when I went from a motorbike to a car, drove a bike for years and yet was treated like an absolute novice by insurance companies when starting out in a car. Absolute joke imo, much much harder to stay safe and claim free on a bike than it is in a car.

A good broker may be able to get you a "discretionary" ncb in respect of your previous car and bike experience.

    Thanks all,

I will take all bits of advice and go for the best option.

I would look into getting a smaller car but the difference is not much. You would have to get a 1.1L car to make any difference.
