iPad and Internet Cafes?

I've made the decision to travel (South America) with my iPad. Obviously the iPad makes certain things awkward... Like transferring files on and off. I'm wondering if anyone could give me some advice about this.

If I bring a portable hard drive with me too, would it be possible to connect the iPad to PCs in Internet Cafes and transfer stuff on/off that way??

With the amount of people travelling with iPhones/iPads these days, I was thinking this might be an option, but would be great to hear from someone who has done this.

Guess there's not as many people travelling with iPads as I'd thought :o

What kind of files do you want to transfer? There are apps out there for syncing, like iCloud or third party apps like Soonr that allow you to access shared folders for doc files and presentations, etc. For your photos, you can use the iPad's smart card reader to load them up. Don't see the advantage of lugging around a hard drive.

I was thinking of Video files mainly. So iCloud or Dropbox aren't really an option.

If I brought my portable hard drive I could throw on a load of movies and series. Then as I went I could copy them over to the iPad for viewing. I am going to have quite a number of 24hr bus journeys etc and reckon it might be nice to be able to pass the time watching The Wire or something.

Kinda thinking that maybe the Internet cages have iTunes etc installed on their computers these days (it's been a few years since I was last backpacking).

You'd probably be best going to one of the travel forums with massive traffic like the Lonely PLanet. Personally I've only touched an iPad once!

Try the Apple Media Devices forum ;)

You'll get a lot of help there.

Just in case a fellow gadget mad traveller comes across this thread, I did find a solution over in the apple forum.....

    Seagate goflex wifi hard drive

I'm not going with it as I already have a few portable hard drives and not going to fork out for another just for the added wifi. But a nifty solution, all be it an expensive one.

Just in case anyone else is ever looking for similar advice with regards travelling with an iPad across South America.
    • Only a small percentage of hostel PCs will already have iTunes installed.
    • To combat this you should bring a hard drive with the latest iTunes installation file (along with any movies series files etc you want to use).
    • You can then quickly install iTunes on any of the hostel PCs.
    • It's best to use the Application Filesharing functionality rather than iTunes library, so get a good video player that allows this. I recommend AcePlayer (plays almost all file types).

An iPhone or iPod can only be controlled from its native pc, so you couldn't add new music or apps to the iPad from a cafe pc without first wiping out what was on the iPad AFAIK, best advice is leave the iPad at home, highly likely to be lost or stolen and totally unsuitable for what you have described. Bring alot of thumb drives and use them to post home your photos once a month, fortnight etc.

You will almost certainly not be able to do this because of the limited privileges internet cafes give to customers regarding what they can install on the computers.

you can download a program think it's called ipodware on any computer that allows you to temporarily store all your music files and photos on any pc. then wipe iPad and then transfer all those files bAck on iPad Afterwards.
