Recommendations on high end aluminium wheelset

Considering upgrading to new wheelset. I ride Citec 3000s, which are very good, but have to be sent to the UK for servicing. I've just broken a 2nd spoke, which I can just about do myself, but hubs and bearings, forget it.

I don't think carbon wheels make sense on Irish roads, and they're generally heavy anyway in clincher form.

So - Fulcrum Racing Zero, Mavic Kysrium SL, Mavic R-SYS, Shimano Dura Ace C24, Easton EA90? Others? I ride a Dura Ace 7900 gruppo.

My second set of wheels are 7 year old Kysrium Elites, never had an ounce of problems with them, so I'd owe Mavic a bit of loyalty.

    Hi Karl,

It doesn't make sense to me to spend double the price of the latest Ksyrium Elites on wheels that will bring you a weight saving of around 100-150g (That seems to be the sort of saving on the wheels listed). I take it your budget is up to e1000. For that I'd buy the new Planet X 50m carbon clinchers and I'd just about have enough left for the latest Ksyrium Elites if I kept an eye out online!:)

I just bought the Zero's but I haven't had them on a proper spin yet. Lots of peeps here recommend the Dura Ace C24 and they'd go nicely with your grouppo. Keep an eye out on cycling adverts as they sometimes come up for sale. You probably can't go wrong with any of those choices on your list. If your gut says Mavic then go with them.

I bucked the trend and advice and got myself a set of Extralite Hyperclinch handbuilt from Italy. Lightest rims (Stans alpha tubeless compatible) on lightest hubs. 1200g @24 and 28 spoke. I'm 72kg and flex is minimal. Similar price to the sl/slr ksyriums and cheaper than rsys.
    Very nice wheels.

I have a set of Mavic Ksyrium SL's on my good bike.

I am about 20kg heavier than you, and you well know most of the roads that I regulalry cycle on. They are a lovely whell and I havent had an ounce of trouble from them.

Also, I find them great to get a tyre on and off for puncture repairs etc (I find Fulcrums tough to get tyres on).

I would replace the skewer however, in that the mavic skewer rattles like crazy. It has been commented on many group rides (fellas have said I have a BB rpoblem or a bearing problem). I couldnt find it - brought it to a bike shop. The guy showed me the skewer - said it was common with the Ksyriums. I just replaced the skewer and havent had the noise issue any longer.

Never seen them nor used them.........but I like the reviews that the hed ardennes get, specifically the handling claims. Seem to recall Lumen has them and rates them as ok.

I am a big fan of campagnolo and fulcrum wheelsets. The campagnolo neutron ultra is a lovely set of wheels. I have a set and have never had any issue with them. They seem to be absolutely bullet proof and have stayed perfectly true no matter where I ride them.

They are a decent weight at 1470 grams, nice bladed aluminium spokes and carbon hub bodies. Like all campagnolo/fulcrum wheels the hubs are easily serviced, although I haven't needed to yet.

Just OK, though. The skewers need to be really tight or the wheel flops around a bit. Not sure I'd buy them again given the silly price. I haven't experienced any magic carpet ride or incredible handling, they're just wheels albeit fairly light ones.

Zipp 101s look nice and test well aerodynamically, but the price is absurd.
