If you deffo want to learn locally, then I'd say Athlone Sub Aqua Club is probably going to be your best bet.

If you don't mind driving to the coast each weekend for a few weeks, then probably Scuba Dive West on Galway/Mayo border or Ocean Diving in Dun Laoghaire.

Google will throw up contact details for all the above in a flash.

You will need to decide early on whether you want to get a CFT or PADI licence. Join a club, you'll get a CFT licence, but you won't get to scuba dive for months and months. Go to one of the others, you'll get a PADI licence (where P = professional, therefore you're paying for it), but you'll be underwater with scuba gear on day one.

Haven't a clue where they are; only know that they exist.

In Ireland, diving clubs (generally known as SubAqua Clubs) are usually affiliated to CFT (Irish Language acronym that translate to Irish Underwater Council) and you pay the club a membership fee.

PADI centres are commercial operations. They provide a service, for which the user pays.

    For prices, contact them.

I would suggest maybe doing a Try a Dive with Padi (in the sea) first before signing up to a club for CFT. You wouldn't be committed to anything yet either Padi or CFT. That would be my safe bet anyway, unless you know for absolute sure you want to do it or have tried it before. Everyone is different though.
