Extracted hard drive disconnects when moving files?

I'm trying to transfer music and pictures from my old hard drive onto my new laptop using a hard drive enclosure. The old hard drive was working fine when I took it out of my old laptop. However, while copying files from it onto my new laptop, it keeps disconnecting, making it impossible to transfer the files I want. I tried at first just to copy the whole 70gb of music in the one go but when this didn't work, I tried copying individual albums. Still no joy :( It'll start working away fine but then disconnect and reconnect itself. It's driving me bananas!! I'm half tempted just to take it into the computer shop and pay them to extract the data but the last time I did this, I paid 50 euro and ended up with a disc of 20 photos and 120 songs, half of which were never even on my computer.....

External caddies can be a bit of a pain sometimes, I would try avoid them unless absolutely neccesary. Some things to make sure are that the drive is firmly secured in the enclosure, you only have the bear minumum of programs open (turn off anti virus scanners, etc).
I tend to use something like Total Commander when copying from one drive to another, I find it more efficient and the trial version should be fine for you

If the old laptop isn't dead, share a folder and transfer over a wired network. Not as quick but more reliable.
