Sister in law has Mazda demio 2000 1.3 automatic , reckoned it was heavy on petrol , turns out she is getting 6.7 km per litre ( or about 19 mpg) anyone any idea why so low

It could be a variety of factors really, but I find those automatic Demios to have a very sluggish gearbox, i.e one would tend to over rev the engine to get any sort of acceleration out of it. Its sometimes down to poor maintenance, i.e. autobox oil and filter not changed as per manufacturers spec, but I dont think they're great from new. Of course there may be an underlying problem, like lambda sensor issues, need for a service, compression probs. Best to have it looked at as that's a very poor mpg.

could be a sticking break calipar, wont feel it at all, but eats away at the fuel

Does the engine take longer to reach operating temperature? It should reach normal temperature within 10mins of normal driving. If so the thermostat could be stuck open leading to an decrease in mpgs -although 19mpg sounds very bad.

Calculation fail, I got ~36mpg via Google calculator, which is probably possible, not great but depending on driving conditions possible.

Indeed, my 1.4 MiTo is currently running at 7.2l/100k. Infrequent short town driving = :'( fuel consumption. Claimed city consumption in the owners manual is something like 8/100k though.

Calculation fail you. OP said 6.7 km/L, not L/100km. ;)

    & btw 6.7 L/100km is ~ 35/36mpg(US), we'd probably know it more as 42 mpg (UK).

FWIW, I had quite a bad experience with McNamaras a few years back. I gave them a Peugeot 406 that was refusing to start and it took them almost a year and €1000 to repair the car. They were unfriendly, didn't return calls, and I had the distinct impression that they either didn't really know or didn't much care what they were doing. Just my 2c.
