    Hi all,

My OH has a HTC desire. She hasn't had a software update since she got the phone. I have done the manual search but it says there is none is that right ?

Currently running Android 2.2.2 if that's any help

That is the last update that was made available to the Desire as far as I know. If you want Gingerbread, you will have to root the phone.

So it will never get a new update ? Is this cause it is an old phone ?

There's a developer Gingerbread RUU available, apparently it's unstable and could cause SMS and MMS'es to stop working etc. Details here. Bear in mind that if you want to apply this update it will also wipe the contents of the phone.

Lots of Android phones tend to be abandoned after one or two major Android releases, unfortunately. If you wanted to root you could also check out Cyanogenmod. It's still up in the air whether there will be a Cyanogenmod ICS release.

Htc released an official update of Gingerbread for the desire. I updated from 2.2.2 3 days ago and everthing is running great.

Yep. Most of the newer iterations of android are only supported on certain models as older ones won't meet hardware requirements mostly, although Gingerbread would be fine if you can manage to get it on via rooting, which I'm assuming isn't what you'd like, or the method linked to above, which isn't much better.

there is no rooting required for gingerbread on HTC Desire. HTC released a cut down version of GB last year.

Use the link above - its a great guide
I did this update a few months ago and now running Gingerbread 2.3.3 and all going very well.
it gets rid of a lot of junk on the phone thus freeing up some more space but I still get the low storage space warning every once and a while.
Phone runs much smoother and boots much quicker.
I have had no issues at all:D

I wouldn't recommend updating to Gingerbread 2.3.3 at all. I did it when the update came out and was left with very little space to install apps. Even trying to get updates for apps from the Market was a problem due to lack of space. I would usually have to uninstall the app and then install the latest version. This was even using the option to move apps to the SD card. I eventually rooted and installed Cyanogenmod and now have plenty of space and a smooth running phone.

I'm with Meteor and there was an OTA download for my Desire Z on Saturday so they must be releasing it now even though it has been available since last June
I had tried the manual install of it back then but it never worked for me
