Help guys. I've being trying to get ky old laptop which doesn't have wrong with it really AFAIK. I did a complete reinstall of Windows XP Pro from a legit disk but I also used that disk for my folks Pc that went dodgy.

I managed to get my laptop to think it was Activated by changing some Reg values as seen in a forum. That worked a charm but I turned it on yesterday after it being off for a week and now I'm trapped in the Loop of Doom!

Before I can log in it tells me I need to - Activate Windows Click Yes/NO.

I click yes and then it says This Windows is already Activated Click OK.
I click OK and it takes me back to the log in screen where it says Activate Windows Click Yes/NO.

If I click No it takes me to the start again where I can only switch off or restart.

Anyone know of any fixes, besides buying windows again? Oh and does Linux support most software that runs on Windows?

Can you not activate over the phone? Linux should let you access the files/content on the disk. Linux doesn't support any windows software, there is Wine but its not that great

cheers for the reply Nick. I actually cant get onto the laptop at all now. I can get in in safe mode alright. Thing is now I'm stuck between a rock and a locked laptop! I'll prob have to a reinstall again and get up the Activation window again. Tis a pain in da hole though. There's nothing much wrong with the laptop really, just a bit old but works fine. Battery is dead (HP:rolleyes:) but thats about it.

Follow the instructions here to reset the Windows Activation counter. This is a legitimate Microsoft link. Once reset you can re activate the normal route (via phone I reccomend).
In fairness laptop batteries for all manufacturers go over time, not something to blame HP for anyways :pac: . Some manufacturers don't even allow the user replace depleted batteries  , a certain fruit one :P
