Hi lads, buddy of mine has just bought a CZ 550 in .308 for deer stalking and needs a scope. His MAX budget is five hundred quid and I know he can't go over that. I have a S&B 6x42 on my 6.5 and find it perfect,so I recommended he look for a similar one second hand, but he want more magnification. He's also iffy about buying a used scope, even though he has used mine which I got fully re-built and paid €350 for(and it's german, not hungarian),but he won't listen:rollseyes: any ideas folks?
    Cheers

Obviously they wouldn't stand up to a S&B, but if your friend wants new, variable power, under €500, able to be used on a C/F (.308) then i would recommend a Hawke Sidewinder 30.

They come in 3-12 up to 8-32. Have 50mm or 56mm objective lense. Illuminated reticle, target turrets, 30mm tube, etc. also they are €400 or less.

As said there are better scopes out there, but not many if any that would fulfill all your mate's requirments.

Cheers Ez, I was showing it to him online today and he seemed to like it. I've used one recently on a .223 and it's a good scope for the money but I wonder if it would be up to scratch on a .308?

I have used a Leupold VX II 3-9x 40 for the last 10 years on a 270 ,at least 3k rounds through it, never any problems.

Had one on my .308 Savage. I say had because i sold the rifle, but it had perfect tracking, no shift in POI when adjustig from 8 - 32 power, positive clicks, etc.

I would not be a fan of Hawke after a bad experience years ago with one, but like your firend i wanted a cheap, reliable scope capable of working on a .308 and the Hawke ticked all the boxes, and all i can say is i never had any issues with it. My Father since got the 6-24 model on his Remmy .308, and not a bother on it either.

Again i'm not saying they are the best scope out there, but for the money yo will not get everything your mate is looking for unles you go higher end scope, and second hand.

I know people will say WTF BUT take a look at the Bushnell Banner 6-18x50 @€;199.

And before you dismiss it read the reviews on the likes of Cabelas.com, MidwayUS in the States. The Americans are using these scopes on their 270's, 300win mags 308's etc.

I'm using this Banner on my Gallery rifle and the glass is very good and the lens have a dusk to dawn coating to help see better in low light conditions.

I had one but recently sold it(I'm an idiot). An absolutely cracking scope. Worth ten times more than you pay for it. I'll be pointing him in that direction if he thinks its good enough,as I will definitely be buying another one soon for my hmr.

you would pick up a 2nd hand 8x56 or similar schmidt and bender for that kind of money and for a stalking scope it would eat and ****e the rest mentioned above

He said his mate is more intent on a new scope suitable for use on a .308 for under €500 so the options above are based on that.
