In the ongoing saga of our stove we now have a black, tar like substance dripping from the join where the pipe enters the chimney. I have read this is bad news, can anybody advise me so I know where I stand with my fcuking cowboy builder. Smoke was also flowing out from ths join at the top of the stove and the pipe.

You seem to have been sold a dangerous installation.

    Contact a solicitor.

Make some pictures, make copies of contracts, bills, etc...

Firstly talk to builder, if you have tar like substance coming around joint, probably cold chimney, it sounds like he used adapter into base of flue,
these are used quiet regularly, so what is needed is flexible flue liner and back fill with vermiculite to insulate flue, this in my opinion would solve the problem,

I was talking to a guy who the stove was purchased from by the builder and he said it sounded like it needs a flexible flue liner. Should this be up to the builder to pay for this, the build is only 6 months old.

The tar like substance is propably creosote. A carcinogenic substance, a fire risk material. This material does not belong into a chimney, into a habitated structure.
The chimney soaked with this material is now useless, it needs to be renovated.

Is it not safe to light the stove until it gets sorted?

    The OP asks:
Is it not safe to light the stove until it gets sorted?

It is not safe, lighted or unlighted.

Your not going to start eating it so i wouldn't be too concerned.

If the builder priced it with a flexable flue then its down to him, if he didnt price it with the flue he should have.

He didn't price it with the flue, I don't think he knows too much about stoves.
