National Hurling Development Plan

Had a brief look today. Its a start. We in Cavan have been the first to run with regional hurling clubs, from 2009, rather than be tied to football clubs which hurling people have always been funnelled towards. Its now up to the county board to provide all of the supports these clubs need in the area of resources. Unfortunately that is still lacking as funding for hurling has continually been cut through 2010, 2011 and into 2012. One of the main recommendations from the weaker counties was the creation of a new provincial council especially for hurling and run directly from Croke Park the reason being that football leaning county boards have no interest in the game full stop. Funding would flow directly from source rather than get lost in the maze of administration that is the GAA. I still feel that this is the way forward for weaker counties. The hurling development centre will help those just under Liam McCarthy but a meaningful National Hurling Board is required. The people employed by county boards wont rock the boat in relation to implementation of programmes but a strong National body with powers to remove funding from counties if they are not pursuing the plan properly. County Boards still hold the purse strings so therefore control the rate of the games development.

A hurling development center in Waterford makes absolutely no sense. Hopefully focus on counties like Westmeath, Laois, Antrim etc will pay off in the long run, there is some foundation there anyway and its not as if these counties excel at football.
