Hi all. Hoping some of you can point me in the right direction. I just purchased a rescue club today which means that I will be ditching the four iron. What should I put into the bag instead? At the moment my line up is: driver,3 wood,5 wood, 4h rescue, 5 - 10 Iron, pw, 56deg wedge and putter. Should I put more wedges in the bag? Tbh I barely use the five iron either so should I ditch that in favour of something else too? Not quite sure though how much use you get out of all these wedges that you see lining player bags?!!! Just want to make the best use of my 14 allowed . Thanks in advance

Id go with an extra wedge every time for a few reasons
1 I can't contol my distance with the longer clubs as well as I can my shorter clubs (wedges)
2 about 70% of the game is played from inside 100 yards.
3 even if you just choose a different bounce option on another wedge it going to make some shots easier.

As Golfnut has said, I would go for a gap wedge as you have a big gap between your pw and 56 degree

Most sets don't have a 10 iron. I think some callaway sets have a 10 instead of a pitching wedge. You should make sure your short irons are well spread from 9 to lob wedge.

What loft is your hybrid? You should also measure your distances to make sure your covered for all distances. If your hybrid goes 200 yards and your 6 iron 160, it would be foolish to drop the 5 iron if it goes 180.

I play callaway big Bertha irons which do have a 10 iron but I could not tell you the loft of it. The pw is 50 deg so maybea 52 or 54deg wedge would be the way to go? Which wedge should be the go to one for sand then? The highest lofted one I presume?

Sand wedge lofts vary by make, but most are set at 56 degrees.
A lot of pros use 60 degree (Lob Wedge) from sand for greenside bunker shots,
as it isn't necessary to 'open' the clubface any further.

As Searay has suggested 'You should also measure your distances to make sure your covered for all distances'.

    I'm using Driver, 3w, 5w, 22degree hybrid in winter / 4iron in summer, 5i-9i,
    47pw, 51mw, 56sw, 60lw & putter.

I'd keep the 4i and ditch the 5w
How often do you hit the 3w, 5w and rescue in a round?

i only use a driver, 22 hybrid, 4 to 9, pw, sw and 51 wedge, putter. I carry a 7 wood but never use it. Gave up on the 60 degree and gave into the slaggin with the jigger!! (which is a very handy tool if you are nervous around the edge of the green starting off)

Who says you need the full 14 anyway??

id agree with you there charlie,

actually i have a jigger also but i found that a similar stroke with the 7 iron gets the job done even easier.

i learned the hard way that you should only bring clubs you can hit out on the course! for me the problem was the woods, im slowly learning how to use them now, and the 5 and 6 irons - which i now "cheat" on by hitting mid-stance.
theres no point carrying a club that you are more than likely going to duff.
ive often gone out with nothing between driver and 7i - which is far from ideal as you can appreciate but meant i at least wasnt driving myself mental with frustration. theres nothing worse than watching some high handicapper duff his 3w down a long par 5 in 50 yard increments as a stream of expletives and divots pollute the air!

    i would be aiming to be in a position to play the following bag;

    driver
    3 w
    5 w
    hybrid in the low 20s
    5 6 7 8 9 P S 56 60
    putter

if i can hit all that with reasonable consistency by the end of the summer ill be a happy man, and hopefully have dropped a few shots.

I see what you're saying about the five wood but I am most confident with my woods....more so than the irons. If I could complete the round without using any of the long irons I would be a happy man!!!!

That's where the hybrid comes in, a 4 or 5 iron is very hard hit for a newcomer or high handicapper where a 19, 22 or even 25 hybrid is much easier get some distance with. I had a TM mid rescue 25 degree and it was one of the easiest clubs hit in my bag. Only sold it cause i can get the same distance with a 5/6 iron now and enjoy using the 5.

On an average round I will only use driver, 5, 7, 51, SW & putter. I'd rather hit the 5 iron than the 22 hybrid cause i know i will get a clean shot with it. Only use the 9 iron for chip n run or short par 3

Maybe this is the reason i get so few birdies / pars!!

Cue the usual high handicap suspects coming on, saying it's their favourite club and most consistent ;)

I'd ditch another one or two and play with less clubs.

    Lighter to carry.

I see what you're saying about the five wood but I am most confident with my woods....more so than the irons. If I could complete the round without using any of the long irons I would be a happy man!!!!

    Based on this I would recommend the following;

    Driver
    3 Wood
    4h Rescue (prob 21 degree)
    24 Degree hybrid
    5-9 Iron
    PW
    54 Deg
    58 Deg
    62 Deg

    This will result in u having to buy 4 new clubs though, which is obviously not ideal. So u could amend as follows;

Keep the 10 iron and 56 deg in the bag and learn how to hit a soft wedge as u have a gap between 50 deg to 56 deg. Puchase a 60 degree, this will cut out the 54 and 58 degree.

This will result in the following

    Driver
    3 Wood
    4h Rescue (prob 21 degree)
    24 Degree hybrid
    5-10 Iron
    PW
    56 Deg
    60 Deg

Based on the above 2 new clubs would suffice and the 5 iron should be kept in the bag for any times the gap between a 24 deg hybrid and a 6 iron comes into play, which is not that often.

    I did the same.
    I use
    Driver
    3 wood 15 deg
    19 deg rescue
    24 deg rescue
    5 (27 deg) -9 (43deg)
    PW 47
    GW 51
    SW 56
    LW 60

Gives me consistent steps up the set and I like and use the 4 wedges for all the options they give me.
