Renaults €86 service

Renault are flat out advertising a full service for any model of car @ €86

Has anyone had one of these? What does it entail?

The tv ad has a lock of mechanics in pristine overalls attacking a car f1 pit stop style, I can't see even an oil change or a new plug for €86 flat.

It's an oil & oil filter change & 25-point "check":
The items checked as part of the 25 point safety inspection are:
    o Body damage
    o Engine oil
    o Brake fluid
    o Coolant
    o Power steering circuit
o Front and rear washer fluid
o Side lights / number plate
o Indicators / hazard warning lights
o Dipped / main beam headlights
o Reversing lights / brake lights
o Front / rear fog lights
o Wiper blade wear and operation of front and rear wipers
o Condition of front / rear shock absorbers
    o Tyre wear / condition
    o Tyre pressures
o Exhaust system (for leaks, mountings)
o Condition of brake system (eg external leaks)
o Condition of drive shaft bellows
o Condition of all seat belts
    o Horn
    o Mounting of bumpers
    o Windscreen
    o Advice on timing belt
    o Rear view mirrors
o Operation of doors and windows.

Lol, even your average car owner could check most of the stuff on that list.

yep all garages now advertising low cost service which is an oil and filter change thats all, they also "check" the car over and note down any repairs needed, its a way to get you in the door so to speak with the oil service and then they hope you get the further repairs done with them and thats were they make there real profit

    Thanks gang,

86 yoyos for an oil change more or less then?

Sounds like many of the 25 are like when they count the key chain attachment as a function on a Swiss army knife.

I reckon even the lads driving the wrong way down the motorway could check a horn is functioning.

Are any of these cheap (€100 or less) services anything but oil and filter changes? It's all I've seen for months. How much does a proper service cost these days?

Its only an oil and filter change and a general check over, if you have drums at the back I doubt they will remove them...

A main dealer is probably losing money on these cheap services. It is basically to get more work in, for example if your timing belt is due or you need brakes, when the mechanic spots this during the service he reports them and then the car owner is giving a price.

Funny thing is every Tom Dick and Harry will be thinking their getting a great service and the car won't break down after:rolleyes:

I bet they wouldn't, most people don't know how to work the lights properly or for that matter most things on that list. Seriously. One girl yesterday, the service advisor had to explain the difference between a wheel and a tyre, unbelievable:eek:

I think the point is that main dealers were charging a couple of hundred quid for the same thing a few years ago.

So is it a good deal?

So is it a good deal?

Depends on the year, model and engine. If it is a 04 1.2 Clio it's not a particularly good deal. If it is a 2011 Fluence 1.5dci then it is a pretty good deal.

Well exactly the same thing is €65 in my garage for reference.

I love these listed '25 point checks'

5 of the 'points' listed above come under the heading of checking levels,
Another 5 under check lights. They separate them just to make it sound like your getting more for your money. There are some stupid additions on the list like body damage and mounting of bumpers. They just make it sound like they couldn't think of anything else to make up the 25 items.

As someone said, its unlikely that they will check rear drum brakes and, like many dealers, may not even remove the wheels to check the brake system properly.

I always do my own service on my Clio, so was mildly surprised on asking for oil, oil filter air filter and plugs to do my service, when the assistant in Halfords told me to wise up and save my money as my car was only two years old with 14k on the clock.
I took his advice, what do you think?
Re price from Renault for service , synthetic oil for these cars can be expensive!

Your taking vehicle maintenance advice from a guy in Halfords?

If the car is only that age and mileage then I advise you look at your service manual as your car doesn't need air filter and plugs at every service.

Renault have 2 year intervals for services but anyone with any mechanical sympathy will at least change their oil every year.

I know they won't check them but my point was that you do not need to be mechanically minded or qualified to check alot of those things. Even your average Irish motorist could.

Just seen the TV add for this offer. It seems they do the service blindfolded so that would be a novelty anyway.:P

Not that surprising, as the real confusion for many in ireland, begins just after they start the engine.
