Great news for jobs and retail in the city. Abercrombie have confirmed the opening of the college green store for this year. Should be a fair amount of jobs for this, and a boost to the city as shoppers descend from all over the country :-) love it or loathe it, its good news for the local economy.

Wow, it'll be a big one then. And with a Starbucks across the road. It'll be the spoiled teenager epicentre of Ireland. Great news for Dublin though

Ugh, well at least it'll be funny to laugh at the lemmings queuing outside.

Do shops like that really create jobs though? Do other similar stores not suffer and have to let go of staff in these straitened times? I'm not being snarky, I'm genuinely curious whether stores like that are that much of a benefit for anyone other than their shareholders and senior management.

If you google abercrombie results feb 15th 2012 you will find a press release. Its in there. They are opening in hong kong munich dublin and 2 other cities.

I would say its a very real creator of jobs. I dont think other companies particularly will suffer as it will be offset by the extra footfall of customers the store will bring.

That area of dublin will be busier and the shops around will benefit i am sure :-)

I'm generally sceptical when companies claim things like that in pressers but in this case I think they might be true. If its seen as a 'destination shop' (for want of a better term) then it'll encourage foot traffic and usually help shops in that vicinity. I think the Disney shop has helped Grafton Street for example.

Even if a large US brand opening here gives the appearance of vibrancy in the city centre, it might help the all hallowed 'customer sentiment'

A shop opening in dublin city centre is hardly amazing news for jobs. It's like having a thread because a new burger king is opening. And a quick google, this was news almost a year ago at least. link
Woo hoo, posh kids now just don't talk like preppy rich american kids, they can dress like them too.

Regardless of your views on this shop, comparing it the opening of a burger king is completely off

Surely you see that even on this thread some are excited by it. Doesn't that tel its own story?

And I say that as some one who thinks its a horrendous shop. But each to their own...

I'd say it could actually create a lot of jobs and will increase footfall down in that area hugely. I remember reading an article about hollister opening in dundrum and it said over 250 people would be employed full and part time by the store. And bear in mind hollister dd is fairly small, and this abercrombie store will be considerably larger and spread over a few floors so I'm guessing this new store could employ anywhere up to 400 full and partime jobs maybe more. No matter what way you look at it, this is good for the economy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,397 ✭✭✭Paparazzo

The difference between how many people could/would be employed is usually a lot greater than the amount of people that actually get employed.

Not saying it's a bad thing though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,939 ✭✭✭mikedragon32

If it's anything like Hollister, I'd expect sales of night vision goggles to go through the roof!

Cannot believe the queues of A&F drones outside these stores. Marketing is indeed a powerful tool.

i see people wearing holister all the time, i remember you would only see a few select people wearing it cause they just got back from the states

Have you seen the gobsh*tes queing, that's right QUEING, outside Holister in Dundrum! The women that work in there are great though (think it's a prerequisite to getting the job that you have to be gorgeous?) so it's not all bad news for this opening :D Might even pop in for a gander...

and whoever said this could create 400 jobs.... can I buy some drugs from you?

Ye thats was me who said that and theres nothing wrong with that, hollister dundrum apparently employs 250 people full and part time so this abercrombie store which will be considerably larger and housed over 3 floors I think could well employ about 350 people full and part time.( 400 was a little over the top)

    @marketty.
Haha, I like this comment. Thou I would think a $90 top in their US stores will probably cost €160 here. That's if their other European stores are anything to go by, eg London. In saying that there's nearly always a large queue there and a&f sales are well up last quarter.

If there is that much of a price difference it would be cheaper to fly to America than buy a few items in the shop here.is it a big brand in the US?I was in one in New York and it wasn't busy nor did I see many people wearing their clothes while I was there.

I think the xmas period means sept october. Thats the business quarter. Still, id have hoped they could have opened it in the summer but we shouldnt complain about 300 jobs, even if we have to wait until october. :-)

    @yabadabado
Abercrombie & Fitch is popular with wealthy college kids in some states but not at all in others. It's still expensive even over there, $90 hoodie when you can get a hoodie in Target for say 10 bucks. They got some bad press over the yrs for basically only recruiting 'models' as floor staff n their brand is favoured by gay guys so this put some conservative guys off the brand(thou I think this may have passed over now) American eagle has become very popular.

They make some good quality stuff which represents great value at the USD price especially if you catch the sale prices. I've a great brown fur lined winter coat from Abercrombie that I got on sale @ $60. Really is fantastic value.

But at the prices they charge in Dundrum and in London? No thank you.

Can't complain about the quality that's for sure it wears n washes well. I got a heavy hoodie on sale in Dallas for $13, fantastic value. But full price even in the US is high. Great their coming to Dublin, least the option is there for ppl n the employment.

Aren't A&F always in the news for treating their employees badly? Or they only hire models or something?

Anyway I'm sure it'll do well, everyone needs an overpriced hoodie with a big logo on the front.

British firm, pyramid interiors doing the shop fit. Was talking to a few of them there. Nice number, flights, accom and living expenses on top of wages for the duration.
Seems silly to pay out extra when there's chippies going a begging already here. I guess a&f have used them before so the devil you know.

Not be pedantic, but it was a BOI branch even into the 2000s.

Don't worry about finding it, just follow the smell of aftershave and that will lead you to it ;)

Works being done to the front of the Habitat Store today too! Regardless of how many jobs it may or may not create, it's nice to see that building finally being occupied again, and at least Abercrombie will decorate it well and maintain it. Though the prices for A&F are extortionate outside the States, it's certainly got the market to buy here, DD is always shrouded with flocks of teens lurking around Hollister, and leaving with plenty of bags in tow. I'm not a frenzied fanatic of them, but their stuff washes and wears well, they've got some good jeans and fragrances. I'm wearing a hoodie I bought in there 4 years ago and it's still perfect! They'll do well!

This American owned business will probably be employing a few locals, many on the minimum wage or less. Probably a few good looking Poles too. And the profits, if any, will leave the country. The shareholders are abroad, and you can bet your bottom dollar the clothes are made in low cost countries where living standards are minimal and people there are lucky to have clothes at all.
If this new shop is successful, our locally owned clothes shops will not sell as much and will let people go. Overall, I would not get overly excited about a new shop opening in Ireland. Big deal. There are thousands of clothes shops in the country already struggling.
I am not fooled by the hype of their pr company, but good luck to any business opening all the same in these times.
