    Hello,

I have recently bought a VW golf mk4 GT TDI. When I bought it I was told it was a 115BHP. I have seens checked the engine code on the sticker where the spare wheel goes. The engine code is ASV. A quick search on this shows that the ASV engines are 110BHP. Not that I'm bothered about 5BHP but when filling in the reg for insurence and on the vrt website, they return with the car at 115BHP? The car was first registered in Northern Ireland and brought into the south in 2006.

Could someone please clear this up for me, reason being I want to order a timing belt kit and water pump but not sure what would do I get. On micksgarage.ie when I search the reg no. it shows as a 115BHP but the ASV's are only 110? Also, will I have to go to the North to get parts or was the ASV's also sold in Ireland?

    Cheers

You will have no problem getting ASV parts down here.

The ASV are part of the VE TDI's as far as I know which, if anything are more reliable then the PD TDI which the 115 hp engine would have been. So you are dealing with two different generations of VW 1.9 TDI here. It seems to be just a paperwork error, if the engine code is ASV then that is that. Popular engine and parts are easily sourced.

    What year is the car?
VW were phasing out the VE's from around 2000 to 2004ish. Im not quite sure on the years but it does make for confusing buying as you would have a 90, 110, 115, 130, 150 and I think a 105 in there for good measure across the space of the life of the mark 4 Golf.

Anyway, for peace of mind you could get a health check at a VW garage, get this confirmed and correct your documentation or go and get the parts you need, though since you have the engine code you are on the right track.

The ASV is a very common engine so don't worry about sourcing parts. My TDI Golf is a 2000 and back then you have a choice of a 90(AGR/ALH), 110(ASV) and 130(AVF?) HP engines. Your one is not a NI/UK specific engine. This seems like just a silly little admin error. Bloody annoying!

    btw:

Is your engine cover like this?

the 130bhp in the mk4s were ASZ and were not released untill 2001
