Crap thing to happen, but serves him right for parking there :P

Question is, how common is a random engine fire these days?

Thought so, and the fact that it's a Diesel too?

I wonder was the driver getting some symptoms of impending doom and just dumped it?

Would engine oil burn that intensely? Seems to be a pool of it on the ground at the front left wing. Maybe the turbo ate itself and engine oil leaked out all over the place?

I'd say it was electrical, diesel and engine oil aren't overly prone to ignition, many the diesel is chugging around with diesel leaking from the leak off pipe yokes.

I blame the authorities for not having any car parks in the area.

Doesn't looked parked to me, its right in the middle of the lane away from the kerb.

Perhaps, as the fire is on the front left and the drivers seat is on the right he swung over to the right side when he spotted the fire to hop straight out at the kerb?

Even it he is parked, saying he deserved to have his livelihood(possibly) burned out is a bit harsh!

Thats exactly why people shouldn't leave kids or animals in cars.

Are commercials not meant to carry fire extinguishers?

Since he wasnt there, what difference would it make and how would you know?
Considering it wasnt close enough to anything else to present an immediate danger and he was in a serviced Fire area (ie not the sticks) I wouldnt be running up to it with my little OEM fire extinguisher if it was me. Id just call the professionals.

We've moved on from the "laugh at the parked car on fire" and are now speculating that it might not be parked :

As for what difference would it make? Small fire + fire extinguisher = possibility of being put out. Small fire + no action = pics in the OP.

I know I'd rather save my car/van and its contents than leave it burn just because it's not likely to spread to anything else.

Well yeah I saw that, but thats just random speculation. The OP says it was parked and he was in a cafe. There is no reason to not believe that..? Him having a Fire Extinguisher or not in the as described (from OP) scenario remains a moot point.

Im aware Fire Extinguishers can put out fires thanks.. and its great that you would want to put out your van and valuables, but its not your van! It may have been worthless scrap with nothing at all in it.

Besides, we are being told he wasnt even there, so this opportunity wouldnt arrise as the Fire Suppression equipment would have been on fire at that point..

Tis the News Cafe. With their awesome breakfasts :pac:

I do know of a 3-year old car that spontaneously caught fire one day, with the drivers kids in it as he was driving through town. Best to always assume the worst when it comes to leaving things in the car "just for a few minutes".
