My brother was looking to get a Toyota Yaris but after the replies on this thread I think it might be not be the best option - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056549362

So what car do you reckon is the best for around 2K? Hes looking to minimize the chance of getting a dud.

Any other opinions...are early 2000 yaris models dodgy?

Mazda 323, Honda Civic (if you can find an unmolested one), Toyota Yaris (the early ones were made in Japan not France and I've heard no complaints about reliability. good safety too), Ford Focus 1.4 (not much power but fine in reality and 40mpg all day long), Corolla, Renault Clio (surprisingly robust and safe). I wouldn't bother with Polos or Ibizas. Their reliability is in my opinion is way overstated and in my admittedly limited experience of them I've encountered serious engine, gearbox and electrical problems. I remember getting into the back of an '01 Ibiza once and breaking the window winder without putting any undue force on it. The engines are generally crap powerwise with rivals developing more power from the same capacity.

Ford Fiesta, €2k should get you a 2002 model:

Skoda Fabia? You should get a 03 or 04 for that money.

God, if you you can stretch to a Yaris, get one. My missus's 2001 is still going strong 11 years on, surviving me learning to drive in it too. Brilliant little thing, not much cop on the motorway, but it gets us up and down to Mayo at least once a month. Or it did until I got my car.

I got myself a Ford Puma 1.7 with no service history (immediately rectified to the tune of €500) for €1700 recently and I love it to bits. Early days yet, but as it's basically a Fiesta with sporting aspirations, I reckon it'll do well.

+1 on Honda civic 1.4, but good luck finding one with no body kit or lexus lights. :(

Yaris is fine but pricey. But there is a reason for that other than reliability. It does many things well where alternatives can't. Huge Interior space for size, doesn't make you tired on long runs due to seating position and visibility, Engine is refined if you are not at motorway speeds, small turning circle, so easy to drive, high mpg and good performance with lowest possible tax.

Negatives : it is not designed to take corners, roundabouts fast, Noisy at motorway speeds, no fun factor.

If you are not restricted with engine size or learner driver skills, I would go for 99-2004 focus 1.6 ghia instead of yaris. more car for less money.
