It's the same as any of the others really. The four wheel drive systems well proven but many are bought for hard work.

I actually think they are a better looking car than the Allroad..

I like them, tried to get one a while ago, but my timing was bad, I didn't want a brand new one and the second hand ones for sale were a bit lacking when it came to the extras... leather seats etc. I'm glad now though, happy with what I have. That and the Yeti certainly stand out from a dull bunch.

So with that in mind what kind of MPG do they return? Roughly. Mainly motorway driving, with weekend trips up into the mountains with kids n dog?

    Or put another way...
    .. Weekly mileage 450-500miles
.. Son aged 10, with sports/hiking gear etc
.. Daughter, 5 mnths, buggy, etc
    .. Dog and crate
    .. 2009+

... Should I consider a regular estate, or plum for and SUV? And what would the consensus be?

I'd feel safer with the 4wd if I was doing much winter mountain stuff with the kids, I reckon you will fit more in an estate than most SUV's... Scout looks good!
