Need a car for 6-8 months

    Hey,

I move around a bit with work and have been placed in Dublin for the next 6 months (I previously thought I was going to London, so didnt replace my car).

The budget is ~€4,200 but I need something that i can sell quickly if moved away with work.

I put up a bit of mileage but not overly bothered if its petrol or diesel.

I was looking at a 2000 altezza, but wary as it may be driven to crap. I was recommended a golf, which would be grand but don't like the look and doesnt have a boot.

    Any advice is much appreciated.

Why spend 4k on a car you're just gonna have for 6 months?

Better off buying a cheap car if you are only keeping it for 6-8 months, you will have less cash tied up in it come selling time. Check out the bangernomics thread for examples.

BTW something like an Altezza is probably the worst choice, between the image they have and the fact everyone wants a diesel these days, you could well be married to that car for a long time.

the contract is 6-8months but these things can be extended to 12 months+, so don't want to buy a crap car just in case.

Looking for something with a bit of a power too, i.e. the altezza

No one is suggesting you buy a crap car.

If selling it for as little a loss as possible in 6-8 months and easily also, then a Golf is your best bet. Get a MkIV one for a couple of thousand and you won't lose much on it when selling in 8 months time.

Plenty of nice cars for about a grand, no one wants petrol so there's loads of great cars going cheap.

Doubt you'll shift an Altezza quickly and get anywhere near the money you paid. Buy a cheaper car and you won't loose as much if you need to sell quickly.

Rent a car for 8 months?

Rent a car for 8 months?

A mate of mine rents a second car when he needs it, €200 a month or so...
There'd be a better rate for 8 months... A tax deductible expense and probably the same as the depreciation on some second hand cars with none of the hassle of buying it, registering it, tax, selling it.....

Renting a car is a tax deductible expense for who?
Renting a car fro 8 months would cost substantially more than the depreciation on a cheap car if one was anyway shrewd at all when buying, by any way shrewd I mean about three brain cells.

    I am relaxed :)
Any answer about the car rental being tax deductible? Can't see that working for the majority of tax payers.

I'm sure a smart accountant could make it happen. The op says that he/she puts up a lot of miles so I'm guessing that this is a business expense...

I'm sure for a PAYE worker a smart accountant could not make it happen :)
I sounds to me that the OP requires a private car, much like the rest of the PAYE population :)

Even if you rent a car for €200 a month for 8 months is going to cost €1600.

Buy a sub €1000 car with a bit of NCT on it, drive it for 8 months, even if you through it away it would be cheaper than paying €1600 on renting one.

Doesn't sound like the op wants to be driving about in a sub €1000 car....!!

The budget is €4200, you could expect to sell it for €3000- €3500 in 8 months I suppose but what happens if you can't sell it and you are abroad?? The car continues to depreciate while you are away and can't get home to sell it... You are going to waste ages looking for a car to buy then before you know it you will be spending ages trying to get rid of it... I value my time more than that...

    Sucks for PAYE workers:):)

But if this is work related, he should be able o claims some miles on it....

Well if a Golf doesn't suit the OP renting will be quite expensive I imagine :)

PAYE workers who use their car for work should get reimbursed by their employer, there is no tax credit or similar available.

Got bored, put some stuff in the 'angernomics thread there that would be of interest to you.

Dropping 4.2k on a car is madness if you may be hopping a boat outta here in the next year!

    I've experience of a one-month rolling lease.

900 plus VAT per month for a bog standard Nissan Pathfinder commercial. Vehicle, tax and DOE only, and insurance is your own business.
