I don't think it's new as such. You were always allowed apply for an exemption to work a maximum of 20hrs a week while on either benefit.

I for one support it, I can't work full time and couldn't keep the job i had 3 days a week as it wasn't suitable anymore. I worked for years despite paying out lots in physio to keep me in said job.

Now that i'm on illness benefit I can apply for exemption in a couple of months and start looking for a suitable job. Or maybe my old job might take me back under the new scheme. As I can be unreliable.

It'll get me back to work and back paying tax, prsi etc.

Did that not change in this years budget, I think you can earn just one payment on a CE Scheme anyway.

Not sure, I'II have to look it up now as I have just applied for the exemption so I can do voluntary work that may lead to paid work.

Just looked up social welfare site and it says there are exceptions but you have to contact them personally. According to my local SW office, it is assessed individually and as I can't work full time but am very eagerly seeking a part time job to suit me they will probably allow it.

I had to apply for exemption just to work voluntarily, to stop me going insane.

This new scheme is different from the old exemptions. You basically give up your Illness Benefit/Invalidity Pension and go on to the new Partial Capacity Benefit, you accept a reduced payment depending on the level of your incapacity and then try to find work.

There was never any reduction to your payment if you applied for an exemption for Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension.

They say that exemptions are still available, but I can see them tightening up on when they give them to "incentivise" people on to this new scheme.

Well, it sound exactly what I need. I have no issue with a reduction if I'm working a part time job. Had the system been there before it would have meant the little extra I got from it would have meant being able to keep up my medical bills, and keepiing my job.

I'm only in receipt of illness benefit as I wasn't allowed to claim dole, as I was honest enough to say I wouldn't be looking for full time work.

In theory, there's no box to tick in my situation so I think this might be a good idea.
