It actually wasn't that obvious a pun. :L
Obviousness aside, you "failed" due to the fact that you made a pedantic attempt at correcting me, not because you failed to recognise a pun.
pedant= A person who is excessively concerned with minor details and rules or with displaying academic learning.
Now let me explain why it was obvious that I meant what I said as a pun.

Notice how I put the word "effects" in italic. This shows that I wanted to draw attention to the word in question.
I would have wanted to draw attention to that word for 1 of 2 reasons.
1. To show my wittiness and understanding of the difference between affect & effect by making a humorous pun.
OR
2. To highlight a lack of intelligence and understanding of the diference between affect & effect.
Now, given my egocentric personality, I think it is clear that I said "effects" instead of the grammatically correct "affects" because of option "1."

ominous = bad feeling about something
loquatious = laughy/talkative
gaunt= skinny,pale
synonymous = associated with...
insignia = bedlam/pandemoniam/MENTAL
they are my words, it's my aim to fit all of them into my exams 
loquacious means talkative, nothing to do with laughing
gaunt means skinny, but comes from 'jaune' so more likely to mean yellowish than pale
No idea what word you mean by insignia apart from the definition Slow Show gave.0 -
