Why aren't the clocks changing around now?

In the Autumn the clocks go back at the end of October, about 52/3 days ahead of the Winter Solstice. But they don't go forward again to Summer time until the end of March, about 100 days after the solstice.

Right now, mid-February, is 53 days since the solstice. The daylight/night-time balance is about the same as when the clocks changed in October.

So, why are we not changing the clocks now? It's bright up to 5.30pm at the moment. A change would mean daylight to 6.30pm. There would be savings in electricity (lighting, heating) etc. People travelling from work would benefit from the prolonged brightness.

Anyone know why we have to wait another 50 days or so for the summertime to start?

I agree. Wouldn't it be better to have summertime hours for 8 months of the year and cut what feels like the darker winter months down to 4.
