The Gibson Hotel is beside the O2 Arena. Next to no walking involved. The Maldron Hotel, the Clarion Hotel and Jurys Inn are all within a 10 minute walk of the O2. None of them would be considered cheap as such, but I suppose that depends on what your definition of cheap is. Their rates will vary depending on the time of the week, what is on at the O2 and what other big events may be on in Dublin at the time, such as a rugby international. Hotels near the O2 are infamous for jacking up their rates when a big act is in town & are playing the O2. There is next to no chance of you getting a deal from any of them if you are coming up to attend a specific event there.

The O2 Arena is in the Docklands area of Dublin. It is not the safest part of town to be walking around in, especially late at night. If you are coming up to Dublin from out of town, the LUAS Green Line goes from Tallaght directly to the O2 with stops at the Red Cow Inn roundabout, Heuston Station, Connolly Station, Busaras, O'Connell St etc etc. It runs until 00.30 hrs. Don't limit yourself to a hotel that is within walking distance of the O2 if you think that walking is your only transport option. It is not. There are lots of budget hotels, B&B's and hostels near Busaras & Gardiner & Talbot Streets that are directly on the LUAS line too. They would be a good 15/20 minute walk from the 02, but would only be a 5-7 minute trip on the LUAS. That area would not be considered to be in the best part of town either, but if you are only going from door to door and you keep your wits about you, you should be grand.
