I cannot for the life of me understand this car. concept is interesting, but in reality they have to make 2 cars. and also make enough to cover both regions.

If any1 doesnt know, the car has one door on the drivers side and 2 on the passenger side.

    Any ideas.

is an rx7 option not better? at least you can produce less units to cover yourself.

Kind of shows BMW up as a cheapskate though, they couldn't be bothered doing this with the Clubman for one of its larger markets.

Good idea and an interesting car.

    Sadly the engine is crap

It's replaced the old Coupe and aimed at the same market.

It wasn't that they couldn't be bothered, the existing chassis of the R56 platform for the Clubman was limited in terms of structural rigidity. If they'd put doors on both sides, it would have failed the American rear impact crash test. The decision was taken to put it on the drivers side, as relocating the fuel system for each market wasn't financially viable with the existing build platform - and market research suggested that the Clubman would sell better in LHD markers, which it has done.

The next gen Clubman platform will most likely be built on the Countryman chassis, it'll be slightly longer, wider and the stance of the car will be droppped. It'll have 2 rear doors, and the potential for the AWD system from the Countryman with the new engines on tap - I'm hoping they'll finally deliver the 240Bhp 1.8 Turbo they've developed. If they do, that'll be my next car.

i thought i saw two in Hyundai in Galway and the 2 doors were on opposite sides of both cars, ie. one had two on the left and the other had two on the right.

Can you pick what side you want?

    Sounds a bit silly

The early cars at dealers were LHD for early demo purposes only. It's almost certain one of them was LHD.

    A 1.6 petrol with 140hp isn't too shabby

A 201bhp turbo charged version will be available later in the year too. The new Kia Procee'd will be based on the Veloster also afaik.

Why do you bring up the RX7 in a post about a Hyundai

Think he means the concept is better

I think he means the suicide doors on an RX8 as opposed to "rx7"

Saw a couple on delivery trucks a few weeks ago, and really like the look of them.

From one side it looks like a funky, 2 door coupe and from the other side it looks like a normal family hatch.

Suppose it will have a limited market, but it's good to see a manufacturer doing something different.

That's what he said: BMW were too cheap to do it right.

'Too cheap to do it right' is a very simple statement. To retool the assembly line for the Clubman's Club Door to be built on both sides would have meant over 6 weeks of downtime at the factory IIRC - that's the same factory that bangs out a few hundred MINI every week. It could have closed the company. They made the right decision at the time, and now that the newer Clubman's allegedly being build on the R60 Countryman Platform, it can be built at that factory (Magna Steyr I think) instead of the Oxford plant.

I think the Veloster looks great - fair play to them for making something interesting. Does anyone know how it drives/ handles ? Korean stuff before has always promised much but delivered a lot less unfortunately, but that was some time ago now, I imagine much improvement.

I would imagine its aimed at the 20 something mother market. As in its very like a sporty coupe in terms of looks etc but one doesnt have to forgoe the luxury of access to a baby seat in the back.

To be fair this is not a unique issue and tends to be the sole reason this type of market sell up their 2 door coupes into something more conventional.

    I can see it working.

We have a 2000 Saturn SC2 in work which has this door set up so its not new.

Wierdly though, the Saturn, which is only made for the north American market, has the one rear door on the drivers side, meaning, because of the ROTR in the sates, the rear passangers always have get out onto the roadway:confused:

I have the Veloster in a couple of weeks for test, I'll make a video. I messed about with a LHD one when it was here, I kinda liked it. Then I like cars that are a bit mad
