Maybe an old question on this forum, but watching Eng v Italy at the moment (Saorview and Freesat). BBC looks a sharper picture that RTE. If you were to show the casual watcher the BBC and then the RTE he would probably think you had switched from HD to standard. Why ?

BBC HD is a much higher bit rate than RTE 2 HD. Satellite HD channels will always be much better than digital terrestrial.

Could it not depend on the equipment that is being used?

The SD satellite on my tv is on par with HD on my friends tv for instance.

Maybe the saorview receiver is inferior to the satellite receiver that is being compared.

Aside from whatever equipment he's using, I'm stating the fact that BBC HD is broadcasting at a much higher bit rate than RTE HD.

Agree completely, but other than equipment at home, the quality of the signal can also be determined by the original source. Often from sports grounds in particular, there are more than one output of the game. A broadcaster may use different outputs ( or their receiving chain is not as good technically as another broadcaster), so that can affect the quality in the home on different tv channels.

Is the OP not watching the same video stream on two different stations? There is only one output from these games as far as I know. Digital is digital so no deterioration as with analogue. It is unlikely that it is re-coded for RTE, unless RTE are using upscaled SD feed.

You are correct, you are also wrong in saying that Saorview will never broadcast in HD at that higher bitrate as you did earlier. All the channels are squashed into 1 Mux right now but won't be forever.

I never said Saorview wouldn't broadcast at a higher bitrate than it currently is in the future?

IIRC Much of the "HD" output on RTE2 is actually "upscaled" SD

Even the mighty beeb dont broadcast in true (1920 x 1080) HD and there have been complaints that the bitrate on BBC HD is not what it used to be.

How can it be that the home TV has a bearing on the resulting image differential? A crap TV will surely display a bad image for BBC HD & RTÉ Two HD, the only variable then would the source acquisition & the transmission quality. Equally if one has a top spec TV model, it will display either channel at its optimum best, if one has a higher bitrate then the TV will display it at a better resolution. Using the DSLR analogy it stands to reason I will get better image quality with a top of the range lens than I would get with a cheap rip off, the constant being my eyes & how I see the resulting image.
