Well lads, have a minor wee problem here but its driving me mad.. i took my laptop apart last night to clean out the fan and heatsink (was dusty:pac:). After I put everything back together the wireless now won't turn on with the laptop when its booting up like it used to before..turns on for a second then switches off again, works perfectly when you turn it on manually, i took it apart again to no avail, aswell as system restore, reinstall drivers, bios, messing around with wireless card??:(
really don't want to reinstall windows but it's hardly a software problem anyway?
any info would be appreciated i'm really stumped.

What is the model of the laptop? is it a hardware switch? or a keyboard key combo? Fujitsu Siemens laptops have that by default, in that case only automation script helps, it runs at start-up and forces wifi on.

Not too sure what's causing this since it works when you manually turn it on, a sure way of resetting card to default is uninstalling it via device manager, then scanning for hardware changes and allowing the system to re-install it. You will have to enter your network key again to reconnect, so make sure you have it handy.

Edit: just realised you said you reinstalled the drivers. You've done pretty much everything I would have done, I thought initially the cable may have shorted, but it's ruled out because you can turn it on manually. Did you change any startup programs? Like preventing certain services from running when windows starts up?

Its a Compaq CQ60 307SA, it's a button thats on a seperate piece of the assembly that goes around the keyboard connected with a ribbon.

Nope, didn't go near msconfig at all.

unplug the ribbon cable that leads to the pcb with the switch and boot without it, it could be a short circuit on that pcb that's causing it. If wifi doesn't shut down after boot up you have your culprit.
Also could have something to do with OS not shutting down properly or not remembering wifi state on shut down.

the power button and the wifi button are connected with the same ribbon

Haha lovely, had a similar case yesterday, compaq f500, aparently it is a known issue with some compaq models, try resetting cmos maybe and check if wifi is disabled in the bios itself. I'm sure you've already done all that if you re flashed BIOS though. Only other things I can think of really. :( Oh also found on some forum that turning the switch on while windows is just booting up helps as well, give that a try :).
