Have you got anything style wise in mind?
    What's your budget?

Some good advice here from the sticky:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056198864

Everything is answered there. If you know what you want, which you seem to do, just be patient and be wary of clocked models from england as well as the usual checks ie. Mechanics, Nct etc.

Thanks a mill for that, Appreciate your reply =)

One more thing. I have a strong feeling that in your budget, you should go for the 2 litre model. It's a little more to tax, but the MPG (which I assume you're buying this for) will be quite excellent.

If you're just doing short trips ie. Less than 120 miles a week, I'd suggest gonig with petrol due to the lack of running costs compared to running diesels that don't get out for a long drive every now and again.

Alas, it's up to you. If you know what you want, then go for it.

Thanks again for your reply :)

Its actually for my boyfriend- he will be using the car to commute to college every day- 150 km of a round trip. We defo want the 1.4 Diesel cheaper to tax & cheaper to insure.

They seem to be pretty good on diesel.

Thanks again for the reply . :pac:

Interesting read! Thanks for your reply. Hopefully the celica will be a good car for you.

I have the mywheels full service checker in work so will check all cars first.

    Thanks :):)

I wouldn't say a 307 would be a good idea for the sake of saving money on tax

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭fluffybunny124

    why not ?

1.4 litre way cheaper on tax than a 2 litre.

Yes but statistically it'll spend a lot of time in garages

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭fluffybunny124

    Because its peugeot?

I disagree- I had my last peugeot 206 for 6 and a half years and never had a days trouble with it.

Prior to that, I had 2 206's and again, same thing. Only reason I changed car is cos I needed a bigger booth after having my child.

The HDI engine is great, one of the best, but the rest of the car is supposedly very unreliable.

There are two 307's in my family and they are going strong, battery change and back spring is the biggest thing to go wrong so far.

Chances are you had a 1.1 petrol.

Thanks robert- everyone knows someone who will have something bad to say about every brand of car. Good to hear that your 307's are still going strong.

Chances are you had a 1.1 petrol. - Colm.

One was 1.1 petrol and the other 2 were 1.4 petrol. Why do you ask ?

Because I know plenty people with petrol 206s with good stories, I sold the odd one without major issue.

The 307 is a completely different car though. They have a shocking rep and for someone looking to save money, buying a yoke like this doesn't make sense.

Okay, well what car would you recommend then Colm?

He just wants something in or around €2,000 - €2,500 to get him up and down to college every day- about 150 km per day. He will be in college for another year and a half and then maybe he will change his car. He's a mature student so a low 1.4 diesel would be ideal as it will be lower tax & insurance. Thanks

Something simple like an avensis td (up to 00) or a Mazda 323 td or something like that, sure you'll pay 630 tax, but they just don't break.

On the other hand, they're not very nice inside and not as safe. But there you go, you can't have it all, and with a modest budget you have to be rational

Best bet I think would be a Focus 1.8 Endura DI (TDDi). If you want a 1.4 get a petrol, most will do 45mpg anyway.

    Or this

Pretty sure these don't have the same engine as the mazda6?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭fluffybunny124

    Really appreciate all the replies.

A 1.8, 1.9 or 2 litre is gonna cost a fortune to insure & tax- he has sold his 1.9 golf , this was very expensive to tax & insure, not the mention the cost in petrol.

He is a mature student so cost needs to be kept to a mimimum, he's not looking for something long term, just for a year and a half while he's finishing his course.

    Thanks again

There's only €200-250 a year in it, which is only €5 a week more.

If he doesn't have €250 to spare, then he really needs to ask himself if he wants to be maintaining an early 307, a car which is known for for electrical faults and general flakeyness

The Mazda I linked to is taxed already, this tax thing is so short sighted.

    Why Diesel?

You need to be in the 1.8-2.0L category to get good bang for your buck a la Mondeo/Avensis etc.

I don't see the point in going diesel for a 2002 and trying to keep it under a 1.4L engine , you'd be better served by a nippy petrol IMHO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Guy is doing 90 miles a day. That's diesel mileage.

The Mazda you sent me the link to is only nct'd for a few weeks, the 307's on done deal are nct'd for at least a year.

Its not just the tax,its the insurance as well. its an extra €250 a year that may not be necessary- I have the My wheels / insurance link checker in work so can check the cars & hopefully he might get a good one, which we may just hope and pray doesnt cause him any trouble.
