Really disheartening this, I was made redundant in January and since then I've only applied for a handful of jobs which I didn't get, but more often than not there is not even a basic cleaning job to apply for, Is anyone else having this issue? The Jobcentre informs me they can't help as the work is not there. I applied for Tescos recently stacking shelves, I didn't get the job, The Job centre informed me they had over 800 applicants, so that's what your dealing with, 800 applicants for even the basic jobs.:(

Yup, lots of people have been dealing with that.

It's not so bad down in Galway now, but when Burger King opened in 09/10? there were similar numbers applying for jobs there.

Keep tryign and all that. Maybe forget the Jobcentre and focus on companies directly? Use any networks you might have?

If you have any sort of experience/qualifications, don't bother applying for jobs stacking shelves etc.

Yes, there is that "honour" thing ...I'd rather be stacking shelves than draw the dole ... but that's the wrong angle.

Applying for those kind of jobs is a waste of time and energy:

    - you won't get it anyway, as your potential employer knows that you will be gone the second something better comes up (and even shelf stackers need training, so why waste that on someone who won't stay)
-focussing on these no-chance ads/jobs is a waste of time/energy that you could utilise elswhere
-not getting replies/interviews for "just a shelf stacker job" does things to your self esteem that aren't good ...especially not if you make it a serial experience

Use your time and energy instead to hunt down that job for you that is out there somewhere. Keep your ear to the ground, follow the news, sniff out the companies in your area that could use someone with your experience/qualifications.
Learn to read the agency ads ...which ones are real, which ones are fake and who/what are they really looking for.
Make yourself known at the recruitment agencies, stand up for yourself with them, tell them what you can and can't do, be pro-active. Just because they have your CV on file does not mean they will forward it when a suitable job comes up ...they most likely need reminding.

And most important of all ...don't let others / circumstances / whatever destroy the belief in yourself and your abilities. Keep your chin up, stay positive ...take time out every now and then to recharge the batteries.

Thousands of glum, desperate people out there ...stand out !
