    Hey all!
I am NOT a seasoned runner by any way, shape or form but have been doing some running with the dog of late to get fit and have registered for the Operation Transformation 5k fun run on the 18th...
Just wondering will my lovely doggy be turned away?
We have been doing some canicross training and would love to bring her too as there is very little suitable for both of us to do out there....

I doubt this would be allowed simply for safety purposes (the dog getting trampled or even people tripping over the dog)

There ARE hundreds of people who will just walk this,
And I dont mind hanging back a bit and letting any seasoned
veterans charge off into the distance! :D
Dog is secured to a canicross belt and always under control,
I just heard through the grapevine that some people last
year had buggies and stuff... Wondered if anyone had any insight!?
Dont want to turn up with the Husky and leave her sitting in the
    car pining for her run!

There are going to be very few seasoned veterans charging anywhere - it will most likely be a thick crowd of people from start to finish. Could be a problem for you and your dog, because your dog is going to be running around the other side of people, and people will be running into your lead.
But I haven't heard of people last year either running with a dog or being turned away because of one, so your best bet is to email the organisers...

Like Raycun said I'd email the organiers, they would be the only ones that will be able to tell you for sure whether or not you can run with the dog.

    As I expected.....
No questions, just a Flat no!

Rolls eyes, way to get people excited about
getting fitter! I really hate having to leave my training buddy cooped up at home...
Anyone want my registration number? >..<

Would you ask if your dog could join in a 5 a side soccer match if you were playing?
If you are relying on your pet for motivation you shouldn't be taking part at all, and you've wasted a number someone else would have used.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 261 ✭✭kimmyt1987

Well obviously not because she can't play soccer...
But she can run! So no need for the smart answer!
We train together in obedience, canicross and dryland mushing...
The dog is made to work and finding events to facilitate dogs like this
in this country is very difficult!

    And a wasted number?
It is a FUN RUN... I dont need the dog to run,
but its meant to be a bit of craic like...

**I'll remind everyone that number transfers are not allowed by the race, so not allowed in this forum.**

You may run with your dog for fun, but do you run in a group? Because it sounds like an accident waiting to happen - if there are lots of other people around you, and the dog is not running to heel, people will get tangled up in the lead or trip over it.

Oh I see, I didn't know that RayCun, thanks for the info!
No problem with her in crowds, but this thread is dead
in the water now anyway if she cant come too....

Anyone out there interested in getting their dogs out
running too should look into Canicross...
Its still a small community in this country and could do
with new people interested and to spread the word!

Mods can lock this thread if you wish,
I simply had a question about the fun run.
Im not really looking to be told that I'm undeserving of a
number just because I asked for my dog to be able to join me.
    Thanks!

A lot of people are afraid of dogs. How do you think they'd feel about someone running alongside them with a dog on a lead? Also no matter how well you think you have your dog under control the animal or the lead would interfere with other runners and be a big safety hazard. 5,000 people running, jogging and walking over 5k is a really really crowded environment.
I can't unerstand how you really thought it might be ok to run an event like this with a dog

Hi Kimmy, I don't know if there are any races in Ireland that are open to Dogs (even with canicross). I have seen a few races in the UK that include dogs (and have seen some mention of canicross). The race information will normally say who the race is open to e.g. runners, joggers, walkers, dogs. My understanding is that there are strict rules and regulations regarding running/walking/jogging races with dogs.

Some races do allow dogs but they generally have to start at the back. Have a look at the Canicross in Ireland facebook page for races that do. I do Canicross with my dog but I really don't think I could bring her to a race as she's all over the place and trips me up even when it's just the two of us  (terrier)

On the other hand any well trained huskies I've ever seen running Canicross seem to run in a straight line in front of their owner only turning left and right when they're told to.. so at the tail end (scuse the pun:pac:) of a race aren't going to be a hazard like mine would. That said.. depends on the size of the race.
As Madon said, email they organisers... worst that they can say is no and if so, go enjoy the race by yourself, and then find another one that does allow dogs to target for your next race :)

They need to HTFU. If they don't, they'll get a PB with a dog running behind them. ;)

Canicross looks like great fun but this is totally the wrong event for it. Packed roads, walkers etc coupled with a tethered dog will be a nightmare. It'll be no fun for you or the dog.

I am sorry if the reaction here came across as harsh to you.

The OT 5k is a fun run but it is a huge event and the organisers have to be mindful of safety. I believe you that your dog would not pose a danger, but many dogs would and I dont blame the organisers for banning dogs.

I do think that your comment that you were refusing the participate because they wont let you take your dog annoyed people a bit as there are many people who want to take part and dont have a number.

I would encourage you to take part, even without your dog. You have worked hard to get to your level of fitness and the atrmosphere on the day should be great.

Yes it is extremely difficult but road races are held to facilitate runners not canicrossers so you really have to take the back seat here and abide by the organisers rules even if you are not given a reason why, really you should have sent an email before you entered the race if running with your dog was the reason to enter this race.

I did this race last year and it was very enjoyable. Perhaps it's just me but I'd prefer people didn't bring dogs along. There were several times I'd people themselves zig-zagging in front of me and then just stopping without warning and beginning to walk and I'd almost run into them which was irritating.

I can only imagine the chaos if people had dogs in amongst the runners, whether on leads or not.
