Which car would have a decent mpg figure, in that bracket. Looking at tdi's diesel but after test driving a few was disappointed in there sheer slowness.

What petrol car in these engine sizes would return good mpg? budget of about €2000.

    Thanks

Really depends what you require and want from the car. More info would be helpful for people to help you :)

    Of course, sorry.

Hopefully going back to college in september in galway, I live in rosslare wexford. Up until september i'll be doing about 300kms to week commuting to work and possibly 50-100 over the weekend.

In september, i will be travelling up to galway each sunday and back home on the friday, that round trip is around 500kms on its own, and possibly 50-100 over a saturday and a sunday.

am i destined for diesel?! by no means loaded with cash, but would appreciate something that would return 40+ mpg :)

    Thanks

    Drive some more diesels.

There will be no comparison between a 1.6/1.8 petrol and a similar diesel when it comes to economy for those sort of distances.

There are several diesels out there with plenty of power. What model/power TDI's did you drive?

    What about a fabia VRS?

Even my 89hp diesel has more overtaking ability than its 109hp 1.6 equivelant

    My bad, I didn't see the OP's 2k budget.
You'd struggle to get any economical petrols or any of the quicker diesels for that money methinks.

Your best option is a Diesel especially for such long distance, Petrol would be costing you a lot.

Diesel cars would give you a better return so if you could afford an extra bit you would pick up a very good diesel.

    Look up

Ford Mondeo 2.0tdci (make sure clutch & flywheel have been replaced)

    VW Passat 1.9tdi

Skoda Octavia or Superb or Fabia 1.9tdi

there is others but for older cars you are better going for the slightly bigger engine then 1.6 diesel as I found them slugish but the latest ones have improved lots

Look up donedeal and the others you will have no problem finding a good car

If you need to get more BHp out of a diesel you could also look at chipping the car and increasing its power

Aren't these engines the same as the Audi 1.9 TDi?

Of which, I found to be very slow

There are different hp versions of the same engine. You may have driven a bad one. While not a pocket rocket, even a 90hp that isnt completely fooked should be nippy enough and good for overtaking.

Slow is relative, what are you comparing it to?

A 1.2 seat cordoba. Which is itself like a sailing boat, with no wind. Thats what i'm comparing it to, and I've driven two of these audi's

    Peugeot 406 HDI:

Available in both 90bhp and 110bhp, even the 90bhp version never felt short of breath.

Nah, you've driven bad ones so or you can't drive :-)

Obviously an exaggeration, but they didn't feel overly quick/fast/powerful..

And I can drive, pretty well thank you ;)

    Strongly doubt it.

I've driven both extensively. I'm not saying its fast or anything, just better than the 1.6 in most situations

You shouldn't. There is a good an scientific reason for it. We won't torque about it though.

It was just on scientific grounds why I doubt it. :D

PS - Higher torque on diesels vs petrol is compensated by lower gear ratios. So effective torque on the driving wheels, won't be any higher on diesel, therefore acceleration won't be any higher.
Only what can be better is just the fact that you can start overtaking from lower RPM without a need to reduce gears, while in petrol you would need to use high RPM to get better acceleration.

Exactly! In every day driving I find a 109hp Focus diesel more usable for overtaking than a 140hp 1.8 petrol. The petrol is quicker, but needs to be worked more, and not everyone likes running an engine at 6500rpm.

Just make sure it has aturbo as there still is afew of the older golfs lets say without and these are slugish.

Most diesel over 100bhp are very quick and defo feelgood when the turbo kicks in.
I would never buy another petrol sure only getting robbed at the pumps
