Eircom Broadband Slower In Evening

    Hi,

We live in a rural area, and have noticed that our broadband is quite slow after say 6pm in the evening. This makes streaming TV shows impossible.

Our wireless access is secured so cannot be anyone else taking it. Also, streaming is slow on more than one laptop, which rules out the fact it could be a virus/malware interfering with the bandwidth.

What are other potential causes of this? I don't know much about network or broadband engineering so is it possible that other users in our area could be eating up the bandwidth? Or does each household get a guaranteed bandwidth?

    Thanks

Bandwidth is shared among all the users on the line so simply it is a peak time for people to be logging on (most people get home from work around this time), your line has a high contention ratio (lots of people on the same line) which is common for eircom lines.

This is a common issue and there is little that can be done about it to be honest. The odds are that some heavy users i.e. people downloading, log on at this time and their activities cause this.

The only options are to look for a new ISP that user lower contention or get eircoms ngb Broadband as this is designed to maintain speeds despite user no's (possibly not available for you)

    Hope this helps

    FNF.
