Advice on Touaregs

My wife is looking at a 2008 Touareg (either the 2.5 or 3.0), and some people have recommended them - but others are telling me they can be very unreliable and expensive to maintain. I'm curious to hear about any owner's experiences. Are they really a nightmare to be avoided, or no more less reliable than you'd expect in a second hand 4x4.

A pal in the UK has a 2.5tdi and commented on how horrendously expensive a simple oil change was.

The recommended oil is very pricey indeed, and the Touareg takes a large amount of it to fill the sump.

My friend is mechanic and he worked on one of these. So heres the story:

The rubber ( seal ) between rear diff and prop shaft got destroyed. Now the best part: you can't just change the rubber, prop shaft has to be changed too as its on single part... Costed 1.2k eu on prop shaft alone...

It was 2.5 diesel too. Can't remember what year.

I've the 2.5 diesel. Bought second hand 2 years ago with huge milage on it.
We had some issue with the prop shaft too this time last year. Local indo checked out the local VW garage and they wanted 1.2k for the whole lot to be replaced. He sourced just the faulty part from some crowd in the north. Cost 300 incl labour to fix.
No other major issues. Oil change and basic service with local guy was €150 I think.
Overall very happy with the it. Need to get it re-mapped soon to get better mpg.

I guess they got some non VW solution to it. Good to hear.

I suspect you put non recommended oil into it.

i know of one 06 2.5 tdi that had two engines before being off loaded after 25k miles ..oil issues .. i think the dash would need a screensaver as the warning lights we constantly on.

another 05 2.5 tdi i knew of had terrible electronics problems and the owner regretted the day he bought it ... fairly thirsty too
