Just seen that Monaco are in the bottom 3 of the second division, 2 points behind le mans in 17th. From Champions League finalists to Third tier French division mayb in under a decade!

We played them in the Champions League not too long ago too. It's all Barthez's fault.

    Any excuse to post this

Sad to see really when you think in 2004 they were the Champions League Final.

I heard they're meant to be kind of well off as well tho, so don't know what the story is. They also got relelgated from Ligue 1 with such a good defense as well so their standing is very very weird

In fairness, their league position is as a result of a extremely poor start in Ligue 2. Their form hasn't been bad by any means over the last 8 games or so. Only the one defeat - http://www.soccerway.com/teams/monaco/association-sportive-monaco-fc/

Indeed. Their front 3 of Rothen (disappointing how his career turned out post CL 2004) and Guily either side of Morientes was really good that season. Evra and Givet also in defence. Many people don't realise Adebayor was on the bench for them in the CL Final too.

Yeh ive read there succes in the past was based on there youth development with the likes of Henry, Petit, Trezegeut and Barthez coming through there ranks, and also with finding the odd gem in the likes of George Weah and Adebayor along the way.

I guees with all the top European clubs now snapping up young talent from all over the globe makes it that bit harder on clubs like Monaco.

Their youth set up was famed for producing talent, names you posted are proof of that. Wenger was there for awhile too, won the league with them and all but since 2004 everything has gone downhill and so quickly too. Serious lack of interest in the club in recent years due to bad management on and off the pitch as could be seen by their attendances. I remember occasionally watching the odd match here and there in the last couple of years and even against the likes of Lyon they were barely selling out half the stadium.

Have no pity for them tbh. Most French people hate them and with good reason.

Because I like to see teams playing on a level playing field If you'll pardon the pun and for years Monaco weren't doing that. They were taking advantage of huge tax loop holes given to them by the Monaco ruling family which allowed them to to everything tax free which wasnt the case with every other club in the French League. This married with the fact that a lot of the popualtion didnt really care for the Football team at all. It was just a vanity project for the Grimaldi's.

I would be sadder for Racing Club de Paris
