Macbook external Monitor question

Hey,

My Macbook screen went on me over Christmas, wasn't dropped or anything. Exactly half the screen went first and then the other half went later.

Its out of warrenty and I need to get stuff off it. Its a 2006 model, with the mini dvi on it. I'm thinking of getting a mini dvi to vga adapter and hooking it up to a monitor. Will this work? Or will I have to have the screen working to get it to output to the monitor?

I can't see why not

I have the same or similar model from 2007 with the mini port, I currently have it setup with a mini dvi to hdmi and it automatically detects that the hdmi output (a tv) is a 2nd monitor.

You may need to go into system preferences and put the new monitor as the primary display (and possibly disable the macbook screen if possible) but this shouldn't be a problem once you can see some of the original screen.

I have the same problem. The MacBook works fine with an external monitor.

It used to be the case (maybe still is) that you could press a function button (f7?) that would switch between extended desktop and mirroring.

Picked up an adapter today and now I have my Mac back! :cool:
