I'm seriously thinking of doing the dublin marathon at the end of the yr. Only really started seriously running this yr currently up to 15km.

I also do a bit of cycling 3 or 4 times a week and do some sportives during the yr, wicklow 200 tour of meath sean kelly tour etc which i plan on doing this yr too but i want to keep up the running during the yr gradually building up the kms.

So the sean kelly tour is on the 26th of aug would it be ok to start seriously train for the dub marathon after that and what sort of kms would i need to be up to around the sean kelly time maybe capable of 30km ?

Wasn't sure which forum to post this in cycling or running, but guess i need the experienced runners opinions for this one.

Not a hugely experienced runner but I was in a similar position to you last year. I did an 18 week program and still found it hard. Have a look at the novice thread from last year and it will give you a feel on what needs to be done. Plans are like 25-30 miles a week and working up to 40 miles plus a week. Cycling is very time consuming and if you have lots of commitments like fmaily, job, study then its not possible to do both. You need to be running 4 or more times a week even in the most basic plans so it means you will be training 7+ times a week. With a LSR you might need a recovery day after it so you will need to fit it all into 6 days a week. try and do a week of your schedule with a week of marathon training program. You will see the problem. I found it hard with just fitting it around a job and no other commitments at the time. Have a read of http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056248197

Marathon training for Dublin starts ideally around July. Should be able to include the Sean Kelly tour in no problem at all.

The answer is no. The absolute minimum I'd recommend for a marathon is 4 months of training.

The good news is that you easily combine cycling and running training, and you will get benefits from both at the same time. Ask any triathlete.

Thanks for all the replies, kinda getting conflicting opinions here.

At the moment i'm easily adding 1 or 2km per week to my run which i plan to keep doing through out the year, as i said around sean kelly time around end of aug i plan on being able to run 30km even if it is slowly. After aug i was planning on concentrating more on running and only going out on the bike maybe once a week till marathon time, i'd already have a very good fitness level, so my novice brain is thinking it's just a matter of switching it to running.

Like surely if triathletes can do it i can ? or maybe i'm just an over optimistic novice ?

What you want is an IM training plan with no swimming :) There's no shortcut to this, you will need to fit a marathon running plan (4-5 runs per week) with a decent bike scheduele (2 rides per week minimum I would think). That's essentially 6 days a week training with a couple of double session days. There is a limited fitness transfer between the bike and run. To help you can do your long bike on the weekend and your long run midweek until you start to cut down on the bike. It takes discipline and some creative time keeping but is doable, have a look at the IM training logs.

ps like the username, obviously a fan of Ben And Holly :)

Ok thanks for this, at the moment i'm hoping 1 preferably 2 spins on the bike during the week along with a long run and sunday would be the long spin on the bike.

At the moment it's just a bit of a dream i'm hoping to turn into reality, suppose i won't really know until i get up to bigger distances running and how it effects me on the bike or vice versa.

I'll see how the yr goes and which one i'm enjoying more, cycling or running, might cut the bike season early, i.e. no sean kelly so i can prepare for the marathon sooner.

ps glad u like the username, was wondering who'd be the first to comment on it, no choice about Ben and Holly though it's the last cartoon before bedtime !
