    +1, A4 all day long.

The Lexus is a nice car to drive, but is too small inside, and Co2 emmisions weren't great on that era either.

still an option but a few more €€€ might be worth it for an A4

I looked at IS 220d back in 08. I found there was far too much of a whiff of the avensis off it. It was pretty dated internally back then so its really old hat at this stage.
A4 or even the now old model A6 would be a nice car, an 09 or 10 reg.

It's similar to the avensis the cabin is very similar to the avensis and they use the same 2.2 diesel engine

To be fair, a 2.2D4D Avensis is rare as rocking horse sh1te on these shores.

I do agree that the IS to too Toyota to be a proper competitor to A4/3 series though.

I can't see any similarities in interior styling between the is and the avensis, and I drove both quite a lot, mechanically, one is rear wheel drive and tiny, the other is fwd and quite big inside,

The a4 has the same engine as the Mitsubishi lancer, so on that basis, it's a posh Mitsubishi

A4 all day long. Have you driven both?

Diesel Lancer is a 1.8 diesel unit, don't know of any 1.8TDi A4's knocking about.

They used the 2.0 TDI cr before the mivec diesel came out, they also used the 2.0 TDI in the outlander and grandis

    A4 is a limited edition

What's Limited Edition about it? There hasn't been a Limited Edition since the current A4 was launched  A few value offers (and the spec you posted has non of them listed), but no LE since the old model run out.

Out of those 2, the A4.

Me, I'd see if I could nab an S60 D3 SE or SE LUX for the same price and end up with more car for the Money.

One could argue that the A4 is just a posh Passat too but alot of people conveniently forget that because it's acceptable when the Germans do it.

OP, I'd go for the A4 as long as it was the Sport model with both exterior and interior S Line options fitted. The A4 in basic form is no less dull than an IS220 of similar spec. Also did you look at the BMW 320d? More powerful than either the IS200 or majority of 2.0 TDi A4s around. Ok, they are have been around a few years now but better to drive and still competitive to the A4 and IS220.

No it isn't, they might use the same engine, but the A4 shares engines with Seat, Skoda, VW... so whats your point?

The IS is nothing like an Avensis. The A4 is far more closely related to a Skoda than an IS is to an Avensis. Anyone who claims otherwise just doesn't know anything about cars.
The A4 is an over-rated piece of Irish wet-dream sh!tbucket. The A4 wouldn't know which way an IS went down a twisty road, and also manages to be the most uncomfortable car in it's class while managing to be the worst handling. Quite a feat. They're both as cramped as each other.
Anyone who buys a 4 cylinder FWD A4 is just a badge snob, they're overpriced, overrated crap. The IS is under rated, it's a very decent car. The 2.2 diesel isn't the most fantastic engine, granted, and the gear ratios are poorly thought out. Drive both and you'll see. If you don't, then you just don't get chassis dynamics.
In any case, don't get an A4, if you don't like the IS then get an Accord or anything else. A4's suck.

Please get to the point, what do you think of Audi A4's?:D

IS. Despite being an older design it's more of a true 3 series competitor than the A4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Is the op looking at a 3 series competitor. The fact that they're not even looking for a 3 series would suggest that having rear wheel drive isnt a priority.

The IS is 4 cylinder too, the only 4 cylinder Lexus bar the hybrid CT that I can think of, surely that's aspirational buying one?

Well, It's a pretty big investment (Bad choice of words I know) so what else have you looked at ?. Let face it, ain't one us that doesn't have an opinion on each of these two fine cars. (in their own right). I think the best outcome from a purchase is that you come home with the right Car for you. BTW and don't get me wrong it's great to get other folk's opinions. If you are doing a straight deal, why not plug that amount in and do a blind search see what comes up.(Just a Thought). I had two A4's in the past, Petrol and Diesel, could not fault them, I went to change last year to an 07/08, but the A4's were way overpriced and a pretty modest spec at that. While I would not consider myself an out and out Toyota fan, I was pretty keen on an 09 Avensis (run out model with sat nav etc) In short, I looked at least 9/10 different cars. In the end I came home with and 08 318dES (I Didn't see that coming !). I guess my point here is, you put in the homework, you eventually arrive at the right purchase for you.
