Just a note to all of you lucky duckies who have still to go on holidays! (I hate you) but a lad is just back from St Anton last night. Said it was Baltic – the condensation on his balaclava froze  They were wearing two jackets, two tops, two thermals. Unreal cold, but great snow! I think it’s set to continue, so a quick heads up if you were humming & hawing over your extra thermals :)

Neoprene face mask = No Freezing

1 Good Base Layer - Skins/ Heli Hansen / Columbia Omni Heat or North Face.

Fleece or a mid layer top,

    and a shell

For really cold maybe a down jacket

I can endorse the neoprene face mask as a good barrier in extreme cold, but the masks will freeze if moisture gets in them ( snow, sleet, moisture from breath). Happened to me at -15, with windchill making it -28deg. The mask froze, inside goggles froze -anything where there could be moisture exposed to the element-froze.

My cousin was in Kitzbuhel last week and said the same thing -26 during the day and -39 with the wind chill:eek:

That's serously cold. Did they enjoy the experience?

He said it was the coldest he has ever been in his life, but that the snow was still fantastic.

Its warming up now, at least in switzerland. Over the last few days I've been in verbier and morzine, it has been no worse than -15 on the slopes, with windchill making it maybe -22. You do need good gear, and the areas that get hit worst are the extremities - I'd recommend glove liners, and of course decent socks. For anyone heading over this week / next week, it will be awesome - fresh snow is coming, temps won't be horrible, and a FANTASTIC base, pretty much everywhere.

Definitely warming up a bit in St. Anton this week. Looking at the forecast for the next week, it's not looking near as cold

    http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/St-Anton/6day/mid

Nice bit of snow due over the next day or so too.

I can confirm it was cold last week.
Was in Garmisch last weekend ( 2nd to 6th ) - my drink froze while I was drinking it and worse still the contents of my nose froze, i.e. when I squeezed my snout it crunched cause of the frozen snot !

Looks like it's warming up a bit end of this week into next tho?
    Well for Czech Republic anyway.

I'm no stranger to cold temperature, but in La Plagne last week we had -23 degrees in town, and well below -30 up top BEFORE wind chill. And it was windy on top of that two of the days.
Drinks froze as you drank them, buff froze solid, we were working to stay warm. Impressively cold.

17 degrees in Les Arcs on Friday (in Bourg St Maurice in the valley). Cold snap definitely over.
