Insane Trade in Differences on 3DS Games

I don't know if many people trade in games here for their 3DS for one reason or another, but I've had a rather strange experience with this recently, and even though I'm in the UK I don't believe it's just confined to there. Maybe if someone has a similar experience they could let me know?

A few online websites still list 3DS games as DS or DSi titles, they're in the same section at least, with places like HMV stacking them side by side. But the thing is, I got the game Frogger recently (made by Konami, classic return of the Arcade game, but absurdly hard once you reach the Casino) and decided to trade the game in.

First, I visited GAME, where I was offered £8 cash or £12

Next, I visited Grainger Games, where I was offered £12 cash or £14
exchange - I was told they would match any local like for like quote

Next, Gamestation, who told me they'd match any like for like quote but still only offered me £8 cash or £12 exchange

CEX offered me £18 cash or £22 exchange - a phenomenal offer considering CEX are usually bottom of the bunch for selling, and £10 more then GAME and Gamestation

But it wasn't over, I visited HMV, who offered me £24 cash or £26 exchange

Then I went back to Grainger and they beat that price by £1

Of course, I purchased it from Grainger for £20 brand new....so I actually made a profit of £7 having played the game

Insane, both the lengths these game stores will go to in order for you to trade with them, and also the astounding differences on game prices

I've only recently started trading in games, and didn't shop around as extensively but I had WWE All Stars and Ridge Racer for the 3DS burning a hole in my pocket. Went into HMV, they had no staff who could evaluate a game.
("We need to see the disc"
    "but it's a cartridge"
"then we *really need to see it"
"OK, I have it in my pocket right here"
*looks at cart* "Uh... uh... I'll need to get Barry. Barry?.....Barry?.....Barry?"
Barry never showed. To this day, I know not what fate befell him)

Popped back a couple of days later, they offered €20 credit (I assume - I had no idea you can get cash, it was my first time :)) or Ridge Racer and refused to accept WWE. And I can't say I blame them. While that was more than I think RR cost me in the first place I needed more if I was going to get Mario 3D Land so I popped into a Smyths - they offered €20 for WWE and €18 for RR which got me Mario for a euro. Happy out.

In both cases there was no mention of a quote-beating service and they had to scan the game to see what price they were offering - which is great because at least there's standardisation across stores (presumably) and the possibility that bureaucracy will prevent the system from keeping up with online deals. Also, neither tested the cart for functionality.

No way near the rollercoaster of quotes you got, but I never said it was a good story did I?
