Hi, need some advice about backing up my macbook 2008.

I have an external hardrive and when I connect it I get the time-machine icon. It says that time machine backs up all data automatically every hour or whatever, but when I connect the hard drive all I see on it are photos. Dosent seem to be an option on the control panel that I can change.
    What have I done wrong?

Does it actually back up or not?

if you go into system prefs > time machine > options, you can see if there is anything selected to be excluded from the backup. Also your disk must be formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for use in Time Machine

does anyone here use remote backup? I'm thinking about using one. backblaze looked ok. Its a pity icloud doesn't allow you see the data stored there as could easily buy more storage with them

I only use Dropbox as I do not need (read can not afford) to fully back up everything and I know have 6.2GB free storage with them.

Can't answer the ops question, but just want to say how happy I am with time machine. My imac hard drive failed and had to get a replacement (dropped it off on sat morning and got an email on Sunday morning telling me it was ready) from apple store. I plugged in the back up hard drive and it took an hour to load everything on, I did some updates and it was as if nothing had happened! All I had to do was reenter my wireless password, all program's were cool!
