Hi there. My son just got an Xperia phone! He's asking can he get some apps on it, but I'm not sure how best to set this up as I'm a bit concerned he's giong to start downloading everything and I'll end up paying for it.

I have an iPhone, and am not familiar with Android, so not sure how to set this up! Do you need a google account? Do I use my gmail account so I can monitor it?

Also, does anyone know how to set up the o2 account (pre pay) so he can't access over 18 content? The guy in shop said he would do this, but I'm not sure if it's set up on the phone.

Register a new Gmail account with the phone for him. This will give him access
to all of the free apps in the market. If he need paid ones you can log into Google Checkout with this account and add your card details. Delete the card details after he has bought them.

If hes only 11 then there's nothing wrong with logging on to the Google market with your Gmail account.

you'll be able to see exactly what apps he's downloading . plus he can't buy paid apps without a credit card. so you have nothing to worry about there .

if your worried about him seeing x rated content then you can set the content filter to match. though that's only the market place and not the Web browser

Just be aware he will have access to your Gmail and contacts if you use your own account.

Thats true what bandit says , its a two way street, set up an account for him that both of you have access too.

Thanks for the tips! I'll set up a new gmail account for both of us and see how that goes.

If you want, you can set up a PIN so he cannot purchase any apps without it. Open the market, and go to Menu - Settings. Select Set or Change PIN and follow the instructions there. Then back in the Settings menu, tick the Use PIN for Purchases box.

THanks again. I've created a new email address and I've finally set up Android Market on the phone. Believe me this was not easy!! Now when I try to download an app I get "Download was unsuccessful". I'm beginning to hate Android!
