Looked at an 08 diesel avensis T2 from a fairly well known dealer today. Said he took it in from dealer in Scotland and that it was 100%. I got the reg, ran a check and everything came up fine, mileage was spot on, not crashed etc. First registered in Edinburgh November 26 2008. So all seems legit. One quick question-is 7500 miles too low for a just over 3 yr old diesel? I'll be doing big mileage so I'll soon get the engine warmed up. Dealer also given 1 year warranty.

If the mileage is genuine and you'll be using is properly from now then your on to a winner. As near as you'll get to a brand new car.

Are you serious? We can't know for sure, but it's likely to have done lots of 500 yard runs to the local shop, church, pub etc. DPF is gonna be fooked some time real soon is what my fear would be :)

A petrol with 3 services in 3 years would be a grand buy though

Edit - only spotted the warranty now. Is DPF included?

I would normally agree but I wouldn't say that any lasting damage would have been done to the DPF with such low mileage. I'm thinking along the lines that if it get used properly from now on then it will have been 'saved' from the issues it was likely to suffer if it continued being used so little.

I see your point! I suppose my reaction was a bit knee-jerk :D

Excuse my ignorance, I've heard of a dpf, but what exactly is it?

Now that you say it, not all do. AFAIK the 2.0 D4D ones don't, only the 2.2.

Diesel Particulate Filter, They basically catch all the carbon and soot that diesels emit to make them cleaner and lower emissions. But they need higher RPM motorway type driving to keep them from clogging up and causing running issues. Short trips and low mileage will clog them and they normally cost 1k plus to replace.

They do but the 2.2 engine gives a lot of trouble..

So should I ask if it has a dpf fitted? Anything else I should look out for? Very tempted to do a deal on this car

You can never know for sure how the car was used.
In 2006 my father got a great deal on a 2000 car (6 year old) from friends, friend - so he knew how it was used.

At the age of 6 car had less than 20k kms done. She had an indoor garage, and kept the car there Monday to Friday as she was working only 5 minutes walk from her house. She used car only during the weekend to visit her family about 40km's away.

Well if its a 2.0 then it doesn't. I'm certain the lower power 2.2 hasn't got one either, just the 180hp 2.2.

If MugsMugs on here spots this he can give you some specific tips, he has a high spec 2.0D

    It's just a basic 2 litre T2 model

Well as I said so, if its genuine mileage and a good price with a years warranty, its hard to go wrong.

I wouldn't bother with a T2 model, they're the same as the Aura model here, which is the poverty spec. Something like a TR or the T Spirit is much better, lots of extras in those - the high spec is the main advantage of buying a car from the UK, well you'd want to be getting something better in return for a car with mph rather than kph clocks. Also, the Irish spec models have a rough road pack, which the UK cars don't, so you are more likely to have problems with the suspension in the longer run as a result.

Lastly, consider something else, the Mk2 is a good car and was a very good car when it came out, but things have moved on since 2003 and there are some really great cars out there like the Mondeo, Insignia, Superb, even the Passat that you should consider. The Accord is also very nice and would be the most reliable of the lot but is rare and expensive.

The car is Nov 2008 not 2003.

You don't say ? That shape Avensis is now a nine year old design, which is what I was on about - things have moved on since then.

The car is Nov 2008 not 2003.

Same car though since 2003. Although in fairness it got a new engine and 'box with the facelift in late 2006, and cars don't change that much... Mk1 mondeo floorpan is the basis of almost everything Ford for the past 20 years.

I had late 07 t2 estate d4d, over then2003 model, it had a new 125bhp engine, new 6speed box, ESP,traction control, brake assist and nine airbags.

It doesn't have (m)any of the other fancy gadgets such as parking sensors, auto wipers and other electronic gizmos but thats not such a bad thing IMHO for a car which is essentially a work horse....
